Are .m3u files on "data" music CDs used by audio systems to display track info?

Thread Starter
Title says it all. I was wondering if some CD players that supported reading data disks (with mp3, wav, etc files) capable of using the .m3u file also burned on there with some programs to get track names, artist name, etc instead of just saying "Track ##". I have seen CD players do such things before but am not sure how as they aren't the most common... can anyone point me towards how this works so I can make compatible disks?

As far as I know, if the CD player supports reading tag info, it reads only from the audio file itself. The track title, artist, album, etc. info are all packed within the file. The .m3u file is just a playlist file that is just, well, a playlist containing all the songs on the disc.

see .m3u

Like Octo said, the info such as artist, title, track number are usually found in the ID3 section of the file (hidden info).

Some players will support M3U files but, again this is only a playlist/location to the files.

Download MP3Tag or some similar ID3 editing software.
