ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2011) — Most of the solar energy systems on the market today bare two major weaknesses: they require vast land areas in order to be built, and the costs related to solar cells fabrication and maintenance are high. A new technology is about to overcome these challenges and many more: floating solar power plants.

More solar news, seems like alot in this forum in the past weekish. But hey, it's the future, just needs to overcome some negatives!

Now you have high costs in terms of corrosion prevention and you still have to maintain them anyway?

We deal with corrosives in the industrial world all the time in mining, wastewater, etc... I dont think corrosion is that big of a concern. There's many ways around it.

My question is how does it affect the ecosystem of the water below and around? Obviously you would NOT want this above a coral reef but I mean it still has to have some affect as there is now a lack of lighting and some heat as well. But I'm sure there are plenty of smart places to stick these like a dam.

You miss the point entirely. This is a step towards another step. With nanotech and new plastics, corrosion will sooner rather than later be a thing of the past.

You want free? Go live in the woods.

The water basins, on which the plants could be built, are not natural reserves, tourists' resorts or open sea; rather they are industrial water basins already in use for other purposes. By that, it is assured that the new solar plants will not have a negative impact on natural landscapes. "It's a win-win situation," declares Dr. Kassel, "since there are many water reservoirs with energy, industrial or agricultural uses that are open for energy production use."
So they don't intend this for use in natural bodies of water, which is good.

Combine these with solar panels and call it a day.

Missed that part. That's really good then!
