sapphire 6950 2gb

OK guys I have officially found the limited for the the sapphire 6950 2gb card. I spent over 12 hours testing Yesterday
I have messed up my gpu core to find this limit.
I hope this will help everyone out there and not toast their :gunner2:gpu like i did:eek:. but it was for the good of everyone with a 6950:typer:

I had my card running on 6970 bios for a few days but it just didnt seem right.
so, Yesterday I tired with stock bios and it didnt work well with asus smart doctor. So i went and got an asus 6950 bios.

1. used the unlock shader only. work great
2. I tested the core clock and tested around with it from 900mhz to 1100mhz.
3. I Test the memory speed and found the safe limited for at least the sapphire card 1300mhz stable no memory screen taring/glitches.

results.

I was able to get the core stable at 940 to 960 with a voltage boost with smart doctor 1.25 +powerboost 20%. anything after 960 cause the core to fail and under clock while testing. what I did was start at 900mhz and go up 5mhz and each time I would test it with 3dmark11 and check the score to see if it went up or down after each test. at 975 core would crash underload and no voltage boost.
After voltage boost it would start to lose performance . at 1ghz to 1050mhz I was able to get it to run but even with voltage boost it was not stable I pushed it up to 1.4 at that point.

The difference btw 940 to 960 was very minor. I would honestly stick with 940 that seem to be a sweet number and also the voltage was stock no increase only powerboost in ccc set to 20%. from 945 to 965 voltage boost is needed+powerboost20%.

how i tested this was using furmark stablity test. I watch the core mhz and if it was steady at what i set it at then it was stable. but if their was not enough voltage the mhz would jump around from the 500mhz all the way up to 949 but it would never stay at 950mhz. only when the voltage was enough it would.

Even when i try to push it to the limited in SD with voltage 1.38 the core can go pass 1ghz but not stable/core failure:(.

the test like 3dmark11 would work but the fps would go from steady 29.9 to random drop and then back up to 29fps. so core underclock failure from overclocking. WARNING over clocking the core pass the limit I have tested will cause gunner2.gifPermanent damage to the core(oc bewaresniper.gif.

memory speed. I notices even with the 9670 bios it did some sort of screen glitch even at 1375mhz:sniper:. and with basic asus 6950 unlock I was able to 1300mhz :cheers:without youtube cause screen to glitch out. anything after that cause either problems on my first lcd or second lcd. watch my video of the screen glitch i am talking about[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqHUD-uV0wg[/ame]

at 950/1400 even with the 6970 bios the card would freeze up.

I find the fan has to be at about 55% for the card to get stable temp.

that is my test result and I hope everyone will use this as a guild so they don't toast their GPU.devil.gif

Lucky for me It was within 7day so I took it back. the card still works at stock but cant over clock anymore. im waiting baaasmiley.gif

a few weeks to pick up the replacement. lucky they have rev1 cards in stock still.

anyone feel free to add anything to this. band.gif

PS: I notice people from other thread have also pushed they cards over 1ghz core and what not, but what I would like to know is it is stable and did it degrade the core performance after a bit? cause none of them have posted anything about the after effect of it as in short/long term more then a few days.

I suppose i can add that my 6950 can do 1GHz+@1.35v at games, benchmarks(Unigine, vantage, and maybe metro), but when i tried 1045/1450 @1.35v with Furmark, it didn't make it past 1 minute.

But i still haven't observed for degration.

I was referring to your damaging the card then returning it.

Overclocking results are dependent upon the quality of the individual card, in other words your mileage may vary.

Yeah, all cards differ, so everyone will have a different limit.

Mine is 1045 core @ 1.36v 1425MHz memory, but I'm also using a water block.

I've been running my card at 1GHz for over a month now and haven't noticed any degradation. I only use 1045mhz for maximum benches.

The only thing I've really changed is I was running it at 1.3v, but I found that I am stable at 1.25, maybe even 1.23, but I have more testing to do still wink.gif

I'll post my results when I have time.

O yeah sorry misunderstanding. yeah that card is good at stock but not high overclock anymore. the gpu degenerates after overclocks and mods. i dont know, Iam waiting a week to pick up another one i hope this one is better then the last one
also maybe price drop due the fact that 6990 is coming out next week

I used sapphire 6970 bios on my sapphire 6950 , yes it works , yes its 100% stable ...

Best stable overclock im able to achieve with out any driver crash in game is 910/1385 @ 1.2v ..

Loads at 65c

Cant complain i guess , now it has unlocked shaders and 110mhz core overclock and 185mhz on the memory .

All in all , overclocking doesnt really boost your fps much on these cards only about 2-5fps maximum id say just flash with 6970 bios and leave it on default 880/1375 , no need to overclock .. the jump from unflashed to flashed was noticable =)

900-950 is roughly the maximum stable limit on these cards ( vary's card to card ) iv seen people hit 1ghz apparently but id love to see how stable that really is ...
