Q9650 reporting wrong temps?

Thread Starter
A friend just got a second hand Q9650. Its reporting about 20 in bios and those numbers are going a bit up and down, but when booting up and starting load P95 it wont change, cores are locked on 35,35,30,38. Checked with Realtemp, Everest and Coretemp.

Cooled with a custom wc loop with 240 Rad with 4 fans PushPull.

Motherboard is a MSI p7n Sli Premium.

It's both unlucky and normal. My Q9450 had 2 sensors which were stuck. It's a common problem with the Core 2 quads.

Do they go up past 35,35,30,38 when the CPU is working?

That is all that matters.

My 2 stuck cores would'nt go over 38 the other two went up to 50. Stuck sensors is common with that line of processors.

My Q8400 has stuck sensors.

All 4 readings do not change at idle and at load?

When one sensor is stuck, often it will not get lower than a certain temperature but it will rise during loads.
And usually it is one or two sensors got stuck. Having all 4 sensors stuck is really poor luck.

If a sensor is stuck, I am not aware of any method to un-stuck it.

However, you might want to try to update the mainboard's BIOS. It is known that an old BIOS might give erroneous, behaving like a stuck sensor sometimes.
Q9650 was released on Q3,2008. If you are using pre-ver 1.3, you might try ver 1.3 (released 2008-11-19) and ver 1.4 (released 2011-01-26).

(I cannot find P7N SLI Premium but P7N SLI Platinum)

All 4 sensors stuck, wont move under idle or load.

Update: Just tried IBT with a slight OC. And they are only stuck below the temps stated. All 4 sensors went a bit up after slight OC and IBT.

My Q9650 also reports wrong temps. 1st core is always 6-10C higher the 2nd and 3rd and 4th always 4C lower than 2nd...
Even on load in prime i don't exceed 65C on first core. Nice chip, see no reason to upgrade as it eats any games i play.

then thats normal.all my Q9650's had either 1 or 2 or 4 sensors stuck at like 27c to 38c but they work above the stuck temps under load.this was a common problem with c2d and c2Q cpu sensors.
