Buying CPUs for Cheap

Thread Starter
So I found a local ad of a guy who is selling two (2) X5650 xeon processors.

These retail for at least $800+ each.

The guy claims to be selling them brand new but he said that he no longer has the retail boxes for them as he threw them away.

This is a very tempting offer because this is exactly what I needed for my upcoming project, I will be putting these in a server for use.

I want to know what I can do to help myself find out of these CPUs are the real deal.

I know the "if it's too good to be true, then it probably is..." deal but I want to know if there are any precautions or things I can do to help further insure me that it is safe.

Unfortunately I don't have a system on that hand that I can bring along with me to test the CPUs before buying so that option is out of question.

But other than that, what should I look for to make sure that the CPUs are legit?

Take photos of real Xeon chips of the same model, should be some on the Intel website. Compare them to the chips he's selling. Also remember how much your current chip weighs, the Xeon should be about the same.
If anything looks odd, then walk away.
Remember, same socket, same layout, same everything, only the model number will differ from your i7.

It's about half off retail price.

Claims it to be brand new and was planning to use it for a Mac but ended up not using them so hes selling.

Thanks for the tips guys, anything else is appreciated.

Look at Pins for bends or burns. and smell the top of the Chip for Alcohol or see if it looks as if they have been recently cleaned up. Most chips don't go bad but they can be physically damaged.

That is like a serial number and will differ between chips. As long as you can see them before buying you will be all set.

thanks for clarifying.

Would this serial number be registerable with Intel or anything like that?
