Thread Starter
So, the question is pretty simple: is it worth going for GTX580?

That completely depends. Give us at least SOME information.

What do you do with your computer?

What games do you want to run? How well do you want to run them?

Do you value the epeen?

etc.

It depends on your value of performance, how did you expect anyone to know if it is worth it to you?

The 5970 is about 2 times faster than the 4870x2.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/297?vs=305
Considering that, divide the 5970 in this benchmark by half and then compare. The GTX 580 looks better, but you might wanna wait for the GTX 590 to be released (supposed to be this month). The GTX 580 will probably drop in price, and hey, maybe you may have the money to get the 590.

ALSO! The GTX 460 in SLI is similar to the GTX 580.

Doubtful, though if it does it will be <$50.

2x 580's will still be faster than 1 590.

Depends on what you want, AMD is all about Price & Performance, nVidia on the other hand Performance, and usually yelds higher performing cards then AMD with much more features such as Physx etc..

The 4870x2 is a very good card, one of the best dual GPU's out there..I had 2 in cross Fire in a HTPC. I have also had the Hd5850 - very bad experience.. then I bought the GTX460 and eventually the 480's.

You should see a some difference in performance since the 580 is very close to AMD's TOP card the 5970(which is basically 2 5870 GPU's in one PCB).

if I was in your shoes I would stay away from dual GPU cards and personally would just go get the 580 ( i am getting four this month for a quad sli setup)

But..give us some more info what you want, what your looking for to deem it as being worthwhile.
