oops that was already said.

look at the 5970 and gtx295. 2 cores, clocked lower than the standard core counterparts.

Yup, and the 280 SLI vs 295 is pretty much the same situation.

The 295 is fast for a SINGLE card but two 280's were faster.

I don't think anyone believes that a 590 would be faster than 2x 580s, do they? Isn't that one kind of a no-brainer?

It's simple, they can't squeeze two 580 cores running at 580 speeds on to a single card without running in to a large heat and power issue. Instead, they use lower clocked versions. This isn't a new concept and if you are expecting the 590 to be faster than 2 580's then you're in for a shock.

What makes you think I'm upset? I'm merely pointing out the obvious. You act like overkill is a concept that's completely unheard of on this forum.

Take your own advice and untangle your panties, there's no need to take offense over a forum reply.
Quite presumptuous, aren't you? If had thought it was overkill for whatever I imagined his needs to be, I would have said so. I merely was interested, so I asked.

Again, I am confused how this seems to be such an alien concept to you.

You're not upset? So what's your motivation for consistently involving yourself in something so simple, that never involved you until you barged in? I asked someone a question, and you let rip like your life depended on it.

Perhaps you need to get yourself a more active hobby, if you feel the need to be so pedantic on the internet to fill your time.

How does it run into power issues with a dual gpu card? The only power issue would be the pci e certification, which means nothing. Do you really think that today's video cards get their power from the motherboard? At the same clocks a 5970 is basically the same as 2 5870s.

Wrong. The 295 isn't two 280s or 285s. It is two 275s, so your whole argument is crap.

more of a heat thing i guess. though it would probs need 2 8 pins! lol i thought it was 5870 cores at 5850 clocks or something :S

Are you still crying over this?

You presume that because of my comment 'Who cares' that I'm ultimately upset with something and out to unleash wrath on an internet forum member.

Step back, take a breath, get a grip on reality and move on. God forbid you read another reply and unleash your keyboard fury.
