It's simple.

If it sells: Good. See: Portal.

If it doesn't: Bad. See: Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days...at least if Yahtzee has anything to say about it. I tend to trust him more than other pro reviewers.

Why do people make it out like it's rocket science? It's not that hard.

Lets see. Sony and Nintendo are japanese. In Japan pc games were and are dominantly console ports, arcade ports, visual novel adaptations, use anime conventions etc.
I am not saying this is a bad thing and western games have benefitted from those games and vice versa. But i can see the trend here of a japanization of pc games (in form mostly), due to economics.
Pc games (even pre-windows) have their own long history in europe and america and those who spout all that nonsense about abandoning the pc, should learn from that history.

Piracy has been around for decades. It is one thing to propose ways to deal with it or redefine your own model and another to abandon pc games alltogether

Just because it sells doesn't mean it's good. There is major proof that sales is directly linked to advertising, whether or not they can make us believe the hype. If you don't release a demo it's another way to trick people, as they will have to purchase the game in order to find out if it is good or not. What you should do is look at the amount of games that get returned back to pawn shops and stores after the first two weeks. If there is a high return rate then the game is probably lacking.

Their legendary unreliability. I don't care how good the warranty is, personally the best warranty in the world is the one you never even need.
My little brothers 360 hasn't red ringed yet, nor my neighbors :/ but the wii and PS3 are more reliable and still cost less then a PC.

Also if the PS3 did poorly because it was to expensive to $600, and more complicated then it's rival, how will a $1000 gaming rig fare? lol, it's far more expensive and far more complicated.

Maybe I'm preaching like that because I see 70 other users justifying theft when they have awesome rigs that sometimes cost well over $2000 and insulting hard working developers all day long as if they were the root of all evil, like it's the developer fault the game is a bad port or the game has no demo, no it's the fault of the publisher which is only interested in money and reducing the cost, and also of the pirates who make the PC a less and less desirable platform to invest on each and every day.

I'd say that rehashing a theme or story without a unique interpretation IS a ripoff. And people ARE being screwed over by being inundated with crap concepts and spinoffs.

If you don't have something to say, don't say anything at all (@ devs). This is the absolute worst with movies and their I,II,II,IV iterations.

no you've got it wrong, you have to make sure your game is good and will sell BEFORE it sells.

My point is that piracy should be ignored entirely. I don't care how strict the DRM is or how good the game is, someone somewhere will not want to pay for it. It's a fact of life. People will steal anything if they're given the chance. So ignore them entirely. Pretend they don't exist. Make a good game with little-to-no DRM priced properly and you will make more money than you know what to do with, and that's all a game company exists to do. The best anti-piracy method in the world is to pretend they don't even exist and give your paying customers what they want. Because they're where your money comes from. You throw DRM on the game and/or make another bland spehhs marine game and they're not gonna want to buy it.

Seems to work fine for Valve, after all.
Ignore piracy? I suppose you also believe we should get rid of police, they're just a waste of money/resources/time too right? Sorry, but when you ignore something that is illegal, it doesn't just 'go away', it becomes a bigger problem. No, I don't support the RIAA, and I'm sure that other guy doesn't either.

Also, I have a feeling you don't have any experience with true game development. So simply saying that something that has never happened on PC won't work is just ignorant. It works extremely well in regulating piracy on consoles. Sure, you could just never go online, but that would be a pretty boring game and you'd never receive free updates that fix often game-breaking issues.

Then every CoD will be priced $100 because the mass love their CoD but all the good 2D games will be priced $5 because eveyone and their dog is a graphic whore.

If you don't want to pay $60 for a game just wait a few months, game prices fall very quickly on PC, I almost never buy a game at its release, especially since we have to pay much more than in the US (and let's not talk about new console games, 69€=$95), and that doesn't give me any excuse to pirate that game even if it's grossly overpriced.
Developers as small guys? Bioware? Treyarch? etc...

People can pay $100 for CoD if they want, I'll be happily playing much more fun and much more cheaper games

As for waiting for the game to lower in price, how exactly is that different from piracy? You're still costing the developers money, even if legally. It's just playing "by the rules"

It is you're unbelievably high condescending attitude. Your immediate assumption that we're all pirates simply because we disagree with you more than warrants such a response from other posters.
