Do I need gigabit ethernet?

Thread Starter
Was just wondering if will improve my ping and DL speed that much. I bought a N600 3400 router. The 3700 is $50 more but has gigabit ethernet. Will I notice that much of a difference? I have cable btw. Thanks!

Gigabit ethernet will only help with transfers on the local network(from computer to computer over the network) instead of at 100mbps it will be 1000mbps.

but it will not help your download speeds because your internet is probably not greater than 100mbps anyway.

What you're most likely looking for is a Killer NIC. It's a Network interface card as opposed to a router. It'll help reduce ping and such.

Just type in "Killer NIC" in Amazon.

there are several factors that effect latency. Distance and number of hops being the 2 primary reasons. While replacing a NIC could result in latency being lower it would be negligible at best. The bottle neck is and always will be the connection to the ISP. Adding GbE would have absolutely no effect on things getting funneled to even a 100Mb pipe.

The only way adding GbE would increase performance would be on the internal network as soadrocksever stated.

It's not going to improve your ping over 10/100.
It's not going to improve your WAN download speed over 10/100.

It will improve LAN transfers between computers on your network, though, assuming all systems have gigabit capable NIC's and you're using a gigabit capable 'router'/switch

Thanks for the info! I mainly got the new router to improve wireless range throughout my house. I went from 3 bars on my netbook to 5. For $60 not a bad deal. I really do not transfer much between my computers. Answers my question. Thanks!

gigabit ethernet is a good idea.
I would not recommend the killer nic stuff though. its just not worth the small performance increase
