Best way to make revolving logo

What's the best way to make a revolving logo?

It's for web use, at low res (50x50) but they also need a large version for other purposes, at around 500x500.

The programs I can use are Photoshop and Illustrator CS5. I have Flash CS5, but don't really know how to use it well, so would like to use the first 2 applications.

I was thinking maybe the Repousee feature in PS, and then animate it as a normal GIF For example, but then thought I would run into the limitations of GIF being colours, of course. Although it's a Black and white logo, I imagine there's going to be more than 256 shades of greys, for a decent highlight blend.

What would you do?

Whats the purpose of this logo? Personal site? For a business?

I only ask because gifs generally don't have a "quality" appearance to them 99% of the time, they reek of cheapness - especially for a prominent logo that will be displayed at the top of a page. Gif's main use these days is as annoying advertisements. I'd go with a high quality static logo out of a vector art program or maybe, maybe do a site in flash (although that's now frowned upon in some circles too...)

you will be ok if you use web safe colors. Personally i would set an image gif with a z-index then set a background with a solid image. I would use JavaScript to call the gif. The reason behind the fixed image is encase someone has JavaScript disabled

Thanks everyone. Although I have actually done most of it now, as I didn't check back here last night, hehe.

I used 3ds Max in the end, as I decided to take the plunge and just follow tutorials. It was actually pretty simple. Then I exported the sequence to PNGs. I was then going to use Flash to sequence them and export as an swf.

I have read your advice, and appreciate it! It wasn't ignored, it's just I went ahead before reading it.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean though Graphicsman, I'm not familiar with Javascript at all.

Also, it's for someone else, and I know it may look cheesy, but hey, it's what he asked for. He said he wanted either a GIF or a flash element. I might try both. And yeah, I personally wouldn't have it but there you go!
