Can I live with these temps?

Thread Starter
I've lowered the voltage/cpu freq from 3.8GHz to 3.5GHz as the temps were getting over 90C while encoding video. Are these temps ok for everyday usage? Ironically the voltage is pretty low AFAIK, but the temps are what I'm unsure about. Also, the CPU/ram is stable now as it was @ 4.8, so this isn't an issue. Just the temps.
I'm not trying to break the 4GHz mark here (I'll leave that for water cooling, when I get it). Just trying to find a good balance between performance and safety.

RealTemp give the same readings, btw.

IDLE:

Thanks

EDIT: idle temps actually go down to ~45C

I think those are too high for everyday use... 90C is DEFINITELY too high. You have a fan on your mugen 2? I would reseat and reapply your heat sink...

Got 2 fans on on case (in -> out combination) and the mugen 2 also has the fan blowing air in the same direction (out of case). Currently have na open case after testing both combinations, temps are lower with open case. And about re-seating... I've tried that... 4 times. And each time spent over 2h on it, as the cooler screws are on the back of the MB
Even bought some expensive thermal paste (can't remember the exact name, but it came highly recommended). Also thought maybe I'm doing it wrong, so I watched some YT clips of properly mounting the cooler and applying thermal paste. Even though this was the 1st CPU in the last 10 years that I've had issues with.
So, to be perfectly honest, I don't see it helping. Is it possible something else is wrong? Or can I really be mounting the damn thing so wrong? What am I missing?

Now that I think about it, though, when I tried resetting all the overclock settings to default and running the cpu @ stock, I still get similar temps. So there's obviously a problem. Can there be a problem with the cooler itself?

That is not a high end cooler, but it should not be at 90c on 1.14vcore!!! I don't know but I don't think even the stock cooler would be that high at 1.14V!!
That cooler should be able to run up to 3.8-4GHz at up to 1.3V no problem!
Maybe you are not getting a good seat on the CPU with your HSF? Or it could be to much TIM? To much can be bad also. Just put a BB sized dot in the center, give the HSF a 1/2 twist left and right and then tighten it down, snug.

i'm running at 1.18V (3.8Ghz), the maximum temp i've got was 75°C during a prime95 blend test.
Something is not right on your rig.

Something is not right on your rig.
I had a V8 on my rig for 6 months at 1.28V @ 4GHz and It might hit 90c on one core, doing LinX 25k problem size.
Op was right for posting because something is wrong.

ok so... I've opened up the case and removed the mugen to find this:

Now I'm no expert, but that seems to me like a very small surface of the cooler ic connected to the cpu. almost like one of them is bent?

But anyway, I've cleaned up a ton of dust between the mugen and it's fan, cleaned up and re applied the termal paste (zalman ZM-STG1 the one with a small brush), re-seated it and tightened up slowly until i could barely go any further and temporarily booted up to test again:

idle is the same @ around 45-50C
but the load on prime95 is at 70-75 max now for 20 mins and counting...
same 3.5GHz @ 1.16v

Should I try tightening it up more (really tight as it is, affraid I'm gonna break it)?

time to lap.

your thesis is correct.

Lack of contact to your CPU's IHS

Are those bubbles? If they are that means air, like it is not getting the right contact? Enough contact?
Just for the hell of it what are the room temperature where you run your rig?
Also stupid question are the fans all blowing in the right directions?
