Can I live with these temps? - Page 2

@Yoko Littner good to know. But how is this possible? is the mugen bent? Or the cpu? And can I do anything about it besides replacing the problematic component?

@H969 not bubbles, just bunched up paste after removing the heatsink. But contact seems to be bad... roomtemp is around 25C. and yes, I've checked multiple times the mugen fan is blowing through the heatsink towards the case fan which is also blowing out. and the front case fan is taking in air. so it should be an ideal combo AFAIK.

I've been doing this for the 4th time now, noticing the high temps and dimsntling the rig, and I really hope this to be the last time, but I need your help. What can I do?
I tried tightening up the heatsink as much as I feel comfortable with and the temps of the rig (now running from my desk opened up) are down 69C @ full load running prime95 for 30mins stable @ 3.5GHz, 1.16v

Is this ok? Or is this down to good airflow since my rig is now sitting on my desk?
And if contact is the problem, do I go out and buy a new heat sink?

Any help is appreciated... just hope to sort this out asap as my room is a mess and it's 4am here

p.s. exuse the lack of quotes but i'm on my laptop which has mouse issues.

EDIT: While running prime95 and cpu @ around 70C, the mugen heatpipes are cold to the touch. the motherboard heatsings, however, are boiling hot. Not sure what this means, but aren't heatpipes supposed to be hot? My GPU's heatpipes are hot at idle...

I would buy a new heatsink... something doesn't look right there. You could probably salvage this one, but it would be a giant headache and time consuming. I suspect your heatsink isn't perfectly flat. Maybe you can contact the company for a replacement first, but I would definitely inquire about a new heatsink.

Thanks. I already contacted Scythe about the problem. I've spent 6 hours last night trying everything I could think of to lower the temps and seat the heatsink right, and every time the temps were still too high.

Just one question: Is this definitely down to the heatsink and not the CPU? What are the odds of the cpu being uneven?
Just want to be sure before I go out and but a new hi end cpu cooler or try getting a replacement...

You could use a small steel ruler and lay on edge to check your chip. But then again the gap may be so small your eye may not pick it up. .. IMO I would get a diff cooler, and then reseat, pull off and check to see how its spreading paste / making contact. I would personally swap to a cooler that uses a bracket on the board rather than direct MB attachment. I know and feel your pain in the removing the cooler from a MB when its attached like that. I swapped from my V8 to a Noctua for cooling reasons, but the attachment processes made things way easier since now I no longer have to remove the MB to remove the cooler.

You must have got something right, your room temp is 25c and now with prime 95 your at 69C that is fine!
Before you were @ 90+ running prime95? Thats a 20c drop!! If you room temp was the same 25c Thats 82F very warm, hot even, by most people standards, or at least to be running stress testing on you CPU.
Sounds like you fixed it....

Check your math... 25 celcius is 77 fahrenheit.

The difference was around 10-15C, which seemed to be enough, but this was with all components on the desk. As soon as I placed the MB back in the case and connected everything, the temps went back up to 50C at idle to 75-80C at load. Even with the extra 2 fans in the case.
But even regardless of that, the CPU heatsink itself is dead cold all around during load, including the heatpipes. I'm no expert, but the heatpipes should conduct heat, and the ones on my GPU and MB are all usually either warm (idle) or very hot (load), meaning they work. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. But seems to make sense. Not to mention the fact I screwed the damn thing so tight it should be warmer than the cpu

Another cooler it is then. Just unsure what to get. Very limited selection here. I got the mugen2 as it came highly recommended and, more importantly, it was available. Zalman, artic cooling and scyhte is pretty much all the air cooling I can get here.
I also have thermaltake big typhoon left from a core2duo build, but no way to attach it AFAIK.
