How old is the Source engine?

There have been several updates to the source engine. The source engine today is most definitely not the one they started with. It is Valve's proprietary engine and that's why they maintain the name across several versions.

Other than CoD, no other franchise has managed to churn out games on the same engine across such a broad period.

bad co 2 has the best graphics to date, when physics and destruction are taken into account on top of great textures and effects.

that being said, you guys are picking way to narrow for your expected titles.

bad company 3 makes no sense. it's a series made almsot strictly for the purpose of testing technology, so why would they put it on a completed engine? it has no substance over battlefield so what would be the purposeful reasoning of releasing a battlefield bad company 3 on the same engine as battlefield 3?

Certainly a modern engine. DirectX 10 minimum, and in my opinion it looks gorgeous. Can't wait for Battlefield 3.

I doubt they just set about a feature set 5 years ago and built it on that completely ignoring what was coming in the future. That would just be stupid. They likely started it w/ the best tech available at the time & planned ahead for future implementations; incorporating them as they were made available to test. Built in layers with options.
