Possible Bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hey guys! I'm new to overclock.net, but can't wait to meet and play with you guys! I currently have an AMD Athlon II x4 630 processor and an XFX 6850 black edition graphics card. I was wondering if I was to get a second 6850 would it bottleneck with my current CPU? Or should I get a new processor (maybe a 1055t) and then get a 6850? Thanks in advance!

1055t then another 6850 ... athlon x4 i dont think will utilize 100% of ur gfx cards especially in xfire .

i could be wrong though ..

Athlon II x4 would do fine with 2 6850s but you gonna need to overclock ur CPU and north bridge to around 3.6Ghz\\2.6Ghz with ur cooler shouldnt be a big problem

Don't get a 1055t for a gaming rig.
For the same money you can get a much faster 4 core, like a 970 or 975. Very few (if any) games would benefit from having 6 slow cores instead of 4 fast cores.
Think of it this way: with a 1055t you will have 6 cores @ 2.8GHz, or 3 cores @ 3.2GHz. Compare that to a 975: you would have 4 cores @ 3.6GHz.
Even a 965 would be better for gaming than a 1055t.

Now having said that, you might still be better off going x-fire before upgrading your cpu. The Athlon would definitely become the bottleneck at that point. But, a second GPU will probably make a bigger difference than a faster CPU. It really depends on what you play and at what resolution you usually run.

I'm sorry. I meant a 1090t. I would also overclock the 1090t to maybe around 3.6ghz. With my experience with overclocking I'll be happy if I get 100mhz. lol

1090t is a different story.
Still, I personally don't think those 6 cores are worth the extra money over a 4 core. At least not for gaming anyway.

4.1GHZ was not hard on my 1090T, and using the handy core lock tool I can get my first core up to a nice 4.5GHZ(by itself).

Read up on OCing and learn how to do it right. Drop the memory speed down a notch, or loosen up the timings before changing the FSB clock. Increase voltage to CPU to around 1.4-1.45V for starters.

I can get my 635 to ~3.4GHZ stable on the stock cooler on a craptastic mobo if I tinker with it enough. With a big aftermarket cooler and that great Asus board you should be able to get a 630 to 3.6GHZ or more without a problem.

Upgrading to a Phenom II X6 will only gain L3 cache (which helps a little in gaming), two additional cores (which do not help in gaming), and additional overclocking headroom. I would not upgrade your cpu this generation. Switch platforms (AM3+ or 1155) for your next processor.

Your current Athlon II X4 would run 6850s fine, though I would definitely overclock both the cpu and the cpu-nb. You can always check gpu utilization with MSI Afterburner. Some games will cpu bottleneck and others will gpu bottleneck. For instance with my 5770 cf setup starcraft 2 and dawn of war 2 are both limited by my cpu. Borderlands and Metro 2033 I have gpu limitations. BFBC2 I will encounter both cpu and gpu limitations depending on the current action.
