noob build query to the experts

Thread Starter
kay, so i haven't done a build since pre-internet days but i'm ready to get back in the ring with a basic blu-ray htpc setup which will hook into the flatscreen and tuner via hdmi. i've been using my old laptops from my business for the task, but i'm tired of having components slowly blowup and not be able to just easily swap them out individually as needed (video on my old vaio finally crapped out).

all we'll use this machine for is wife checking her email via outlook; streaming netflix, hulu, pandora, other internet video and music; internet surfing in general; occasionally maybe a bit of online gaming like DDO or warhammer; playing blu-ray and dvd; no tv; no dvr type stuff; no massive storage requirements.

i'm hoping to reuse two laptop 2.5 hdd's in the masscool hot swappable internal enclosure and my wireless keyboard/mouse setup; other than that everything else will be 'new'

can anyone give advice if this build is just moronic or is it just crazy enough to work? brutal truths and useful constructive criticisms encouraged! the first numbers are product numbers, this is all sourced through tigerdirect

^What he said. You're getting an ITX motherboard and an ATX case.

Also, I wouldn't use that stock 500W PSU.

thanks hick n chuck

for one thing the case includes 500w power supply and is dirt cheap compared to every other case option out there it seems. its going to sit with stereo components in the entertainment center so its basically of the same form factors to fit in easy enough and look like the rest of the equip. also thought more room inside = cooler operation? and it would seem capable of adding in anything else in the future without issue

any suggestions of alternate cases, or anything else though, greatly appreciated!

Your going to need a graphics card for Blu-Ray play back.

Something along the lines of a 5770 should do.

thanks bobicon, big misses like that would be a bonehead move on my part.

the motherboard specs do claim though: "Powered by the AMD E-350 Dual-Core Processor with AMD Radeon™ HD 6310 graphics (DX11), the GIGABYTE GA-E350N-USB3 HTPC Motherboard provides exceptional Blu-ray high definition content playback unmatched by previous integrated graphics solutions. The GIGABYTE GA-E350N-USB3 HTPC Motherboard features an AMD Hudson-M1 Fusion chipset which provides 4 native SATAIII storage interfaces with superfast 6Gbps link speed and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 with superfast transfer rates of up to 5 Gbps." am i reading that wrong that it handles blu-ray play back?

Don't use the stock PSU. The case is probably dirt cheap for a reason.

No, the hot air begins to pool if you don't purchase powerful (high CFM) fans.

Lian Li cases are really nice if you decide to go ITX.

It will, but not very well. In my opinion, it would be in your best interest to get a cheap Athlon II x2 build, or Core i3 (1156) build and OC the chip to hell. A 5770 would be perfect for your gaming needs. Zacate is great for a netbook or nettop, but not much else.

kay, thanks again so much for the input, here's a rebuild of the build. i do like the idea of not having everything built in/on the mobo, again when video flakes out i can just replace the video card, or upgrade piece by piece in the future. first thing i'm confused on though, the motherboard has HDMI port built in, the processor and it seem to tell me they can deliver the video. is a separate video card still required at this time to play blu-ray or to achieve the infrequent gaming? if so, could i just add that in the future? other questions i have are does the power supply fit in this case, work with this mobo, processor, how does one determine that. And does the memory chosen here work as well, there aren't enough specs given in what i'm reading so far to know if i've chosen proper speeds, etc... on that either. this case is defianately better looking than the previous, and with the &#*@load of side, top and rear perforations seems as though heat build up would not be an issue. i'm spending about 14% more for this build than the previous.

Hardest fail ever.
The I3 w/ h55 is PERFECT for a htpc w/ no gpu UNLESS you want 24fps.
The 5770?? are you kidding me? The 5450 has more power than needed for hd playback.
I have been using that case and psu for 2+ years no issues. The x-master (looks like you have changed it).

That phenom is pretty overkill but looks like you are getting a great combo deal. Take a look at nmedia cases also.

Yes, the power supply will work.

Yes the memory will work. Speed of it will make zero difference to the video playback.

On board graphics will never match a discrete graphics card. Blu-ray doesn't HAVE to have it, but I would. A 5770 is WAY more than you need though.
