It was updated with HDR, shadows, etc. and was used to create COMPLETELY different games. HL2, CSS, DODS, TF2, Portal, L4D.
The valve games and cod series are in a very similar situation, and yet all the valve groupies won't admit that the source engine needs to be retired.

It's fine for valve to reuse their engine, but cod can't do the same?

And as for quality, l4d is not quality. It is the exact same garbage as the first one. HL2 looks just as good as l4d. So in other words it looks like ass.

I never mentioned L4D2 being any different from L4D1. L4D certainly looks far different from HL2 in its base form. I think what you're not seeing is that HL2 itself has been updated along with the neat additions that were made to Episode 1 and 2. HL2 on release looked much less appealing than it does now; and it certainly does not look like "ass." Some of the additions include pretty remarkable HDR lighting, facial expression animations, and AI improvements. It was also likely the first game to introduce the neat flowing water effects with ripples.

And yes, it is fine for Valve to reuse the Source engine even more than they already have if they keep up the pace of their updates to it. COD on the other hand doesn't get any prettier between MW1, MW2, Black Ops, and likely MW3. Show me screenshots proving otherwise and I'll rest my point. And I guess again, to make my point clear: Valve made completely different unrelated games on the Source engine, not like COD has been releasing a new COD every year for the past 3 years now on the same engine. (The biggest difference between Valve and IW re-using their engines)

I have a feeling Portal 2 will be the last Source game.
As much as I love source I admit its showing its age.

The debuted Source with HL2, I suspect that they will bring out the new engine with HL3.

If were lucky it will be an open source masterpiece in its time, like Source was.

Yea, I feel Portal 2 will be the last as well. Something tells me Valve has been working on a totally new engine, and Half Life 3 will cover the content that Episode 3 was supposed to have. Things have been too quiet and too slow regarding Episode 3.

open source masterpiece?

the source engine doesn't share anything with the namesake of "open source".

open source is the release of software source code for free use.

i'm sure you mean something else?

It's not quite open source, but I think he was referring to the free availability of an SDK, allowing hundreds of mods to be developed by the community. That involves quite a substantial amount of source code being shared, so it is open source in the sense that it is much more open than typical software.

This.

I dont know of any other game developer that gives away a tool as powerful as Hammer for free.

Good to know that game developers think this way.
EVERYONE thinks money first. Just different people apply that differently.

Ex:

Dev A: to make the most profit, we should do the minimal work required to save as much money as possible while still making a game people will be suckered into buying.

Dev B: to make the most profit, we should work really hard to make a great game that everyone will buy, making us tons of money in the process.

...if you ever think a dev is working for reasons other than money, think again. If you ever think ANYONE is working for reasons other than money...think again. Sure, lots of people love their jobs, but they wouldn't love them if they didn't pay.
