How are Western Digital passport drives?

Hey all

I'm thinking about getting an external hard drive for backing up my data, not a whole lot, just about 300 gigs or so.

I'll be using the free version of Acronis that's available to WD drives.

How are passport drives? Are they any good? The main reason I'm considering getting one is because of it's compact size.

This is the drive I'm considering.

WD makes solid drives. I've always used them for internals, and have handled quite a few of their externals for my line of work. Jump on it

They have been very reliable for me the past two years I've used them. I would spend the extra $25 and get the 1TB version

I love my passport drive. It's great for backup, but I use mine for moving data from one computer to another(typically from one of my friends to my own or vice versa). A lot more convenient than a full external since you don't need to haul around a power cord/supply.

I would just stay away from a larger drive like the 1TB Passport. 320GB or 500GB would be fine. I've seen many of these 1TB drives that have failed more so than any other external hard drive in my experience.

Fantastic, looks like I'll be picking it up, +rep to all!

One last thing, if my hard drive goes bonkers and I need to restore it with the cloned drive on my 500 Passport drive, would I need to have an OS installed on the internal drive or could I just boot from the USB and do it from there?

I'm currently making a backup image of my work laptop on a Passport right now. Works great. Never had an issue with it in over 2 years.

I save an image of my Rigs drive onto the USB drive, then restore from USB if needed. All I need is a windows recovery disc. Works just fine. That's how I migrated to my 1tb drive.

Just go to "Backup and Restore" and choose "Create a System Image". Make sure your drive is formatted with NTFS, that way you can save a file larger than 4Gb.
