[Joystiq]Jaffe: Console makers should limit game updates to four per year - Page 2

Some games are utterly atrocious in terms of being "finished". In the case of Test Drive Unlimited 2, people were having troubles connecting to the servers due to connectivity and load issues. Then people were having corrupted saves losing all their progress. Then they mislabeled and incorrectly modeled cars (Bugatti Veyron was labeled as an inline straight 6 engine, and the Ford Mustang GT is the body of an older model when it's labeled as the latest 2010 model are two examples).

There are many many more things wrong with the game and since then they have released 3 or 4 patches less than a month from release. Shake my head..

EDIT: Forgot to add a very faulty oversight on preordered cars: A Pagani Zonda (Tricolore model I think) was replaced by a bugged Lancia that had a 250-some MPH top speed. Impossible to drive car but something that should've been caught before release:

I kinda agree with his sentiment, if not his suggestion. I do think developers need to do it right the first damn time. However I don't think capping updates to one per season will help that end. I can't play New Vegas at all right now because of bugs that simply shouldn't be there. It refuses to stay running when I try to start Dead Money. The moment Vera starts her first meeting with the player, Bam. Desktop.

A wise man once said "You couldn't get away with releasing a buggy game in the cartridge and cassette days. You'd be sentenced to trampling under the company brontosaurus." It's something many developers need to etch into their monitor bezels.

Valve and Blizzard are about the last 2 solid devs left. Blizz puts FOREVER into games, and sure they find bugs, but they work FAST to fix it. And their games are so tremendous it's no surprise to find bugs. I mean can you imagine the code-work it takes to add or change ANYTHING in WoW? That game may not be liked alot here but ya gotta admit, the data needed to run it is just flat huge, and insanely complex.

Am on the fence with this one. Games and the components they need to work with are hell-a-lot more complicated and varied than they were back in the day. And now with digital distribution and high speed connections, they can fix issues and get the patches dispensed relatively quickly.

Of course you don't want major bugs, such as frequent crashing and issues with saves, but I wouldn't want to wait an extra 6 months for a release because they need to get it perfect either.

Middle ground is fine with me.

Also, the way many bugs are even discovered to be fixed are after it's been released to the mass public.

I would rather wait and get a polished product than not wait and get one that doesn't work. I want to play video games, not beta-test them after paying for the privilege. I really wish Obsidian had delayed New Vegas by about two or three months and spent the time doing nothing but bugfixing.

I bought Dead Money on release day and I still haven't gotten farther than the first discussion in the DLC because of a crash that just shouldn't be there. THAT is inexcusable.

The funny thing is Obsidian isn't even spamming patches. There's only been three or four and it's six months post release. With the amount of bugs in the game there should be a CONSTANT stream of updates coming. I might be easier on them if they did but as it stands I don't even see evidence of them trying.

this is how i feel as well, if the game crashes or fails to save that's a problem, other than that oh well it happens.

If the devs successfully made games for the PS1 and PS2 without any updates then they should have no problem doing it for the PS3. Updates are so PC. Why not just unplug the damn console and plug the PC if you want updates?

I don't think game updates should be limited at all. I want them coming down the pipe as soon as possible, within reason of course.
