Of course it helped selling this card greatly, in detriment to the 6970 which in turn got low sales comparatively to the 6950. but if PowerColor says it can be unlocked it should. Maybe AMD just made it more tricky to actually unlock.
Yeah but GTX 570 > HD6970 and are same price. No reason people would buy HD6970.

There was an update in the tpu thread, a PC rep confirmed that the cards are supposed to unlock. They are trying to figure out why some cards are not unlocking because according to them the silicon is hand picked to unlock.

It's good news for you guys with cards en route. It's also good news that the silicon hasn't been fuse cut, since these are bin chips from what I assume to be current stock.

post from PowerColor rep on the TPU thread:

Sorry guys about this issue, we are looking into this!

We are checking our production records, the GPU's are suposed to be hand picked (pre tested) to run with all shadders enabled!

If you guys dont have a fully shadder GPU, you can RMA the card to get a good one.
I will be asking for the performance bios (full shadders enabled) if you guys want to try to reflash the card.

I will keep you posted!

Well there are some reasons. It's not quite that simple

6970:
* better performance at high resolutions
* more AA options
* eyefinity supports 3 monitors on a single card

570:
* more polys
* phys-x

If using in crossfire/SLI, the ATI definitely gets the nod. Crossfire scales better, and the extra RAM is a must for high res.

That's provided the cards aren't being sold at a loss.

I personally would never have gone ATi if it wasn't for unlocking, so your point does hold water.

Heck yea, I bought 2 cards cuz they unlocked, 570/6970 performance for 2/3rd the price. And then the threat of them disabling the shader unlock prompted purchase of a 3rd card!
