New to OC and fourms, help with E6400 OC?

Thread Starter
Hello everybody!
Newbie to the fourms and first timer at overclocking, sorry if I made a mistake posting this, or if the post is too long to read.

Anyways, just got my new ATI 6850 and it's ready to game! Problem is that my old motherboard and E6400 are still running at stock speeds. Since the easiest way to overclock was to raise the FSB and CPU Voltage, I did just that, and got from 2.18 to 2.56 to 2.8 then finally to 3.04, then I hit a wall. Oddly, I can set my FSB to 400 and play around with the voltage, adding a pinch here and there (+0.01 to overvoltage FSB, DDR2, etc) and it would boot properly. However, running Prime 95 for about 5 min causes a BSOD. Any help? My goal is 3.4 stable.

Here are some Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe @3.04 2.18 Stock
2x 1GB GSkill F2-6400CL5
2x 512MB Corsair CM2X512A-6400
Gigabyte GA-965P DS3 Revision 1.0
Diamond ATI Radeon HD 6850 256 Bit Bus 1GB GDDR5 Stock Speeds
Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 460W
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus w/ 2 fans, Arctic Silver Matrix Thermal Compound
Gigabyte 3D Aurora Full-Tower Case

Temps: 20-25C at load using BIOS temp sensor

Here are the settings in my BIOS right now:
Went into Advanced BIOS Features and disabled HDD SMART, CPUID max to 3, No Execute Memory Protect, CIE, TM2, EIST, Virtualization

Mobo Intelligent Tweaker (Overclocking Settings):

Robust Graphics Adapter: Auto
CPU Clock Ratio: 8x
CPU Freq: 3.04 GHz (380x8)

(G) MCH OverVoltage Control: Normal
CPU Voltage Control: 1.40625V

Thanks in advance for all of your help!
I suspect the RAM is the problem, but can I still overclock to 3.4 w/o upgrading? I spent all the money on the 6850.

You should be able to hit 3.4, i would try changing your memory timings to 5-5-5-15 and drop the memory multiplier just to get to 3.4 then adjust after that, and put pci express freq to auto, I just upgraded from a 945p-s3 and setting pci-e to anything but auto would limit my e6400 to about 2.4, going to auto I managed to get 2.8.

the last thing I would try is to remove the 2x512mb sticks, mixed sticks and even just having 4 sticks can make it less stable.

Robust Graphics Adapter: Auto
CPU Clock Ratio: 8x
CPU Freq: 3.4 GHz (425x8)
CPU Host Clock Control: Enabled
CPU Host Freq: 425????
PCI Express Freq: Auto????
C.I.A.2: Disabled
System Memory Multiplier: 1.66????
Memory Freq: 705 i think
High Speed DRAM DLL Settings: Option 1
DRAM Timing Selectable: Manual
Cas Latency Time: 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 5
DRAM RAS# Precharge: 5
Precharge Delay: 15
System Voltage Control: Manual

PCI-E OverVoltage Control: Normal
FSB OverVoltage Control: Normal
(G) MCH OverVoltage Control: Normal

Normal CPU Vcore: 1.325V

Thanks Bkpizza for your help, but I still get BSODs while running P95 in Blend mode. The BIOS does not let you key in a manual Memory Multiplier, just fixed decimals, so I left it at 2.00. Memory runs at exactly 800MHz now, CPU 3.2 (don't want to risk 3.4) unstable. Anybody else can help?

Have you bumped VCore?

Try raising cpu voltage to 1.42, and try to run 3.2 stable, also reduce memory multiplier. make them run at ~600mhz. timmings 6-6-5-15.

Yes, about that, when I set my FSB to 400, I also raised the CPU voltage to 4.25, so no Shortage of Vcore there. I originally even kept the 4.25 voltage at my 3.04 clock.

A full 1.0 overclock is about the most you are probably going to get on your older platform.
Maybe a bit more but that is a lot to ask.
That being said setting your ram to 5-5-5-18 will most likely help you get it to run over 1,000mhz.

LOL I hope you mean 1.425, not 4.25. What about NB voltage?
