Help with PSU for Case Mod Project

Thread Starter
So I am embarking on a case mod adventure in converting an apple g5 case to fit a micro ATX mobo. This will not be a hackintosh but rather a hackindos.
Pretty excited for the project and looking forward to getting started. As part of the mod I will be fitting the power supply inside the original apple PSU mounting which laid in the bottom of the case. This will involve taking apart the PSU and it will need to have a thin profile. As such it must have a top fan ,since I will be taking this out(I will have (hopefully) adequate cooling) to gain the most vertical space.
I'm probably an idiot for this and I am sure I will hear about it. In any event could you please help me pick a PSU wattage need. I have used the online calcs but they give some pretty wide ranges of info so I figured I'd turn to the experts. While I dont have the cash for all these components yet I will hopefully get them at some point and dont want to have to replace my PSU (remember it is being modded).
Mobo:
GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-UD2H Micro ATX AMD Motherboard-8 pin CPU connector?
CPU:
Phenom II X6-plans to over clock pretty heavily based on cooling.
Graphics:
Current:GeForce 9800GTX OC
Future:Likely a 5870ish card
RAM
2x2GB DDR3 1333 or 1600 ram w/some mild OC
SATA:
1 DVD R/W, 2 7200 RPM HDD
Fans:
4 90mm
3 80mm

I think that covers it. Also, open to thoughts on the Mobo. I like it for the onboard 1394 support which would be nice in getting the front panel Firewire to work.

Thanks!

Your best option is to look at 1U PSU's. They're not that much more than normal PSU's and should fit the bill.

FSP's got one that should hold your rig just fine.

How well do those 1U work for a high demanding build?

I'm making a custom WC'd case that is essentially going to be as small as possible, so everything being smaller matters, though I was originally intending to just use a normal PSU since my scheme appears to beable to fit the PSU.

for 1U, under heavy load, since 700W seems to be the near top end on that, can they adequately cool them selfs since they seem to be small form and an long-exhaust based design.

The 1U PSU I listed will chug along fine; but it's going to be loud as sin at the same time.

You'd be better off looking at a more normal sized PSU I do believe. Unless you don't care about the noise.

Awesome!!!
I had no idea about this form factor. With any luck I wont have to open/gut my psu. Sounds like it could be a bit loud but oh well.
Now, about that 8 pin CPU connector? Simply use two four pin connectors or will I need to find an 8 pin specific unit
Thanks!

4+4 = 8

That sounds stupid, but it's how it work. Two 4pin ATX 12v plugs turn into a 8pin EPS12v plug

Cool, just wanted to make sure that the polarities wouldn't be wrong. In any event that FSP comes with an 8 pin connector.
IN researching these power supplies it sounds like they are pretty loud. How do they compare to typical PSU noise. Since this will be a daily driver I dont want it to be obnoxious.

Well obviously you could do a bit of a custom method for cooling them, but at stock they are pretty much "ear poping loud"

Hmm,

I hear ya, either way I'm going to need to get my mod on since I dont really want a screamer for my rig.
Maybe I can just mod an ATX PSU a la Torque x86.
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/ind...owtopic=100720
If either option means getting my hands dirty in the psu than I may as well save some cash.

You could try somethin like that.

You wouldn't really need to mod the actual PSU. Just transplant it from the housing really.
