Zalman VF3000F Questions

Thread Starter
So I've got EVGA reference GTX 480s in SLI on a Foxconn Bloodrage. The Bloodrage is nice in that the two x16 slots are 3 slots apart. I'm very happy with the performance of my GTX 480s, but I'm ready to address the noise as it would be nice to be able to play a game without headphones. I don't really have any interest in water cooling so I'm looking at getting a pair of Zalman VF3000F coolers. I do not have any room in my case for AXPs as those are a little longer than the reference card.

Question is: I know the VF3000F takes up 3 slots, but how much clearance is there to a card in that 4th slot? With another big PCB there will it choke that first one out and negate its cooling ability? The VF3000F looks pretty open on the sides, I'm not sure how critical a totally unimpeded front surface is. I've thought about putting a Spitfire on the top card and the VF3000F on the bottom card, but would much prefer the cards to look the same and don't want to risk one of those little VRM coolers falling off while the card is under load. I like how the VF3000F installs.

Thanks.

P.S. Should I consider water? I don't fold. My CPU temps are fine on air. Not desperate for another 0.4GHz or anything like that. Would probably only cool GPUs. Preliminary estimate would put me at what, $500 on a loop?

i am running gtx470 sli with 2x vf3000f without any problem. my board is gigabyte p67a ud4. it will lower your temps and sound. only bad thing about that cooler, fans are not pwm. so you have to buy a fan controler like kaze 5.25 server. so that controler can control fans depend on temp.

I thought it came with it's own little fan controller? From what I've read you can just kind of set the fans at 50% and they won't be any louder than your typical case fans and will get the job done in any normal load situations. Are your cards literally sandwiched together?

Water is an excellent idea with SLI 480s.

you can use fans at %75 and no any noise. but you will need %25 more if you have to max oc.
manual control just suck.

Well after a lot of searching around it looks like the VF3000F takes up 3 slots but really needs the 4th at least mostly open as well. So I don't think I can run these on this board unless I put the other one in the 4th x8 slot. Maybe I will look at water cooling options.

You can also try the more expensive Accelero Xtreme Plus with VR005 ramsinks, that'll probably take up 3 slots and should be quieter/cool a bit better than the VF3000F. Though I figure going water would probably be the best.
