RAID Array Help

Thread Starter
1Will multiple arrays work with the same RAID controller, like my motherboard http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...px?pid=3755#sp

2OR using different RAID controller for the same array? Such as one of the SSDs using one RAID controller and the other three using the other controller and have it SET UP as RAID 0

3Also will it a problem if an optical drive uses a SATA port that shares the same RAID controller as the RAID array?

I plan to use 4 SSDs in RAID 0 and 2 HDD in raid 1 to back up the SSD continuously (at first I wanted 3 HDD in RAID 5 just for worst case scenario - one fails and the other fails while backing up DATA, but only southbridge supports up to 6 drives and it will be used for my QUAD SSD RAID 0)

1. Yes, you can configure multiple RAID arrays on a single controller, usually. Check your motherboards documentation (I would have taken a look quickly, but your link is broken). Even if it can not do it (this is pretty rare) you could always configure a software RAID.

2. Not exactly sure what you mean here. You can install a RAID controller card if your mobo doesnt support multiple arrays on a single controller (RARE). You however can NOT configure a single array with multiple controllers.

3. No, there is no problem with that. You can have all your SATA ports filled with what ever devices you want. Only the drives set up in your RAID configuration will be used by your RAID controller.

You should have no problem setting up your RAID arrays with the single controller. Its really only with the old motherboards that first supported on-board RAID controllers that this was a problem.

Hope that answers your questions.

k thanks, the link is fixed I hope you understand that i mean the RAID controller only supports up to 6 drives so I can't have both QUAD RAID 0 and TRIPLE RAID 5 at the same time as it will pass the SATA capacity of that controller

Yea, no problem with that board at all.

I see what you mean now. You would have to get a separate RAID controller card to do that. I've seen them as cheap as $30-$40 if you really want the 6 drive/2 array setup.

You mean 7 drive/ 2 array.

I will be using QUAD + DUAL Array. Wont the two arrays work with the Southbridge RAID controller (for 6x Sata III ports) and the optical drive using the Sata II with different RAID controller.

You would have to get a separate RAID controller

Can't do as all the graphic cards cover the PCI EXPRESS slots. Luckily for my case as it supports to 12 drives

Right, I meant 7 drive array.

Yes, use the 4 drives for RAID 0, then 2 for RAID 1, all connected to the 6Gb/s ports.

Then use the 2 3Gb/s ports for your optical drives.

Take pics after your done too. I havent seen many cases loaded to full capacity with drives and PCI cards.

You mean RAID 1, RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives

Sure it will be a while tho when I sell my old parts, and on my birthday I get some money. I'm young by the way

If you want to see pics of my case a while back ago (has been updated constantly) PM me.

One reason why all the express slots are covered, well crossfire as you can see in the specs below and the 5970 is outfitted with a MASSIVE cooler, Artic Accelero Xtreme 5970.

Just the PCI EXPRESS slots so two slots are left: the top PCI EXPRESS x4 for sound card eventually, and I don't plan anything for the PCI slot, such as WiFi, etc as I can just use dual Ethernet cables for maximum speed

PS If I go Intel, I will go liquid cooling and I still require 3 more SSD and 2 identical HDD which will be mind blowing near 1k AUD

Does RAID only work with identical drives (same model no.) or it can work with different drives?

For example:

I already have a 1TB drive and if I want to RAID 1 it would I have to buy the same drive or I can just get any 1TB drives out there even from other brands?
