For a gaming perspective i would say get the 2600k or hold out until IB comes along because that may be compatible with socket 1155 or go to a new "up market" socket.
Yes i own a 980x, Yes i can run any game without cpu bottleneck but the 2600k does just as good job.
The upside so the 980x over the 2600k is the 6c 12t that i drool over every time I'm rending video and encoding (which i do a lot hence the purchase of the 980x). The 980x i find is more for heavy multi threaded applications and will only get a few fps higher than the other i7's in games that are not multi threaded.

Unless you are running multiple programs at once, rendering, encoding and running F@H all at once then get the 2600k or hold out for Ivy Bridge which will be more cores / threads than a 980x.

My usage atm is the following..Currently 12threads @ 100% usage using 11.4gb memory and running 167 processes is my normal computer use.. i<3 my i7 lol
Oh Ps if you get a 980x join our OCN F@H Team lol.

This is why I come here and get advice from you guys, that way, i dont get the deer in the headlights and go "well if this is good then this one must be better because it bigger", and it keep the epeen monster away, and helps me keep grounded. thanks guys, but I want to run this by you again to make sure I got it. I should first look into upgrading my Monitor if I want to get higher res. Other then that I have a hell of a rig for high end gaming? And if my rig and monitor are done, and I am to change out my Chip, dont go SB, but go with a 1366. and a step up (be it minor) would be a 950 or 970, but its really not needed. But if I was going to which of the 2 would you say? And should i up my ram past 6gig to 12g? or wouldnt see any change there either?
And I have some questions about WC maybe tweaking it, but I will probly have to go over to the WC area for that.

Yep, your current rig is very nice, only upgrade maybe in a years time get some high end i7 cpu as they will be cheap as chips and your system will still flog

For gaming:
First things first, get the 3GB GTX580's in SLI. You've already got one of the baddest rigs around as is. The ONLY real room for improvement (for gaming) is more GPU power.

Next, grab a bigger, badder monitor. Hell, grab 3 for Surround .

Finally, if you STILL happen to find cash you want to blow for some strange and odd reason...I SUPPOSE grabbing the i7 970 wouldn't be a bad choice. It will honestly add NOTHING to gaming. But it will boost your epeen by a good 4-5".

And no, no reason for gaming to go past 6GB of RAM. Unless you are actually running out of RAM as is, you have no reason to buy more.

well going over..yes you do a have a high end gaming machine..also throw in a few SSD's and do some Raid on it to gain better disk performance also trim your game loading times..well for gaming 6gb is already enough..12gb would be okay although you might encounter problems moving to it..also if you plan on upgrading on some other time get the 970 instead of the 950(saying you will be upgrading a few months from now..)

the red markers are a MUST

the thing on the 3gig GPU is that I am stepping up this evgas to 580 so I have to go with vanila 580 that are 1.5gigs. How much will that hurt me having 2 1.5g over 2 3g?

It won't hurt you that terribly much unless you go Surround with 3x 2560x1600 monitors.

Will not happen, for one i can only afford 1, and my desk will not hold 2 30" so 2 lol. But if the day comes I do get to Surround set up will my system handle it or will need a tri sli 580 to pull it off?
