PS3 (fat) freezing and atrifacts, pre-ylod symptom?

I just picked up a PS3 from craigslist (that was probably my first mistake..) anyway, got it home and it said something about an invalid hdd. I had an extra 20 and 60gb so I popped in the 60, and when I rebooted the console it detected my hdmi, and just froze up. several reboots later, it always freezes up and gets screen artifacts before I get to the menu. This happens with both hdmi and multi-out. I tried all options in safe mode and the other 20gb hdd I had. It seems like it's a motherboard issue, specifically a gpu issue - I say this because when frozen if I give the console a light tap the artifacts move a bit as if there's a bad connection somewhere. The last time I tried booting the system into safe mode that also froze up with artifacts. I guess thats just further evidence that it's a gpu issue.

I'm planning on doing a reflow this weekend, but before I do that I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Its acting like a pc would if the graphics card wasn't seated just right, and as soon as you re-seat it in the motherboard everything is fine.

I don't know if it's going to YLOD, it may never actually fully kick the bucket.

Did you get scammed or did you know it was kinda broken?

I want to say scammed, because it was advertised as a fully working system, but it was only listed for $125 and I offered $100, so I should have seen it coming. I have done 7 or 8 xbox 360 reflows so I kinda sotra figured if something wasn't right I could attempt to fix it, and if all else fails I can turn around and sell it as a busted system to recoup some of the money. My main concern is if there's something else it might be before I take the heat to it. It looks like they aren't as easy to test as the 360s are, as in testing it before putting everything back together.

This is an original 20gb backwards compatible model. I thought that was the 'fat' system.

It sounds like it needs reflowing. If something isn't sitting right, the reflow ill fix it.

its weird though because everytime I've gottena YLOD, it just downright happened. there was no artefacting or anything.

Yeah thats exactly why I asked if there was something else it might be.. I've never reflowed a ps3, actually never opened one. I'll give it a go tonight.
