newest BB photos not sure if im getting better at this lol

this was our last home game and since im not able to follow our team out to south Carolina i tried a lot of new things last night mainly a higher shutter speed. i tried going up to 1/640 but i felt like with the noise it was producing and the images not being perfectly in focus every since time or very sharp at f2 i went down to 1/500 which is an upgrade from what i normally shot in the past which was 400

i was not as happy with the photos i got last night than i have got in the past. i think it was because there just was not as much action under the basket as the final score was 90-48.

some of these were accidentally shot at 1.8 because of the wheel on the back of the 7d i now realize that i can use the lock switch so i dont change fStop on accident while shooting. i intended to shoot them at f2

so like i didnt want to go too high ISO and knowingly underexposed a little because i feel like the noise will take away more from the photo since they already are just kinda sorta sharp some are even a little off on the focus because of the lens. im not sure if this is what most other people would get if they have the same stuff i do. but i dont know of any like photography classes where i can learn more to get better captures with my camera because it seems like im kinda winging it since i dont fully know what im doing. suggestions would be awesome especially for those that are in GA and might know where i can get lots of pointers. obviously i lack money for better glass but im saving up for a 50 1.4 and 135L. just kinda hard because im teaching myself photography, and learning from the feedback i get from you guys

thanks for reading all that if you did. all the feedback helps A LOT

settings: f2 (sometimes f1.8) 1/500 ISO 2500

You're getting better at this Definitely seeing a steady improvement in your pics.

For noise, there's a technique I learned about (and I think Dream Killer covered this in his guide) where you overexpose the image slightly then bring it back down to normal levels in PP. This should minimize the noise in the dark areas of the photos compared to normal exposures. It's called ETTR if you want to check it out.

awesome ill check that out. because i dont know how to do any advanced PP so if i can get it straight out of the camera and it be great that would be amazing

I agree.

I've tried that 'technique'. It's not something I'd depend on, to say the least.

The thing is, ISO-2500 is crazy even for a 7D. You would have more luck with the Canon 50mm f/1.4, like me and r31 have.

OT: r31, you never answered my PM - what photography sites do you consider better than dpreview?

If you do it properly, it's pretty reliable. You have to gauge it so it's overexposed enough that it works but not too overexposed so you blow out the highlights. When looking at a histogram, this means you want the humps as far right as possible without actually touching the right side (which will result in blown highlights).

No yes, I've done a lot of HDR in relatively short history of being a professional photographer, and I'm sure I did it well. It's just not something you can rely on.. that's why I never go above ISO-400.

exposing to the right wont work right since hes limited on shutter speed. imo its more useful to expose to the right for more DR then noise control.

try using a more agressive NR mask over the background and a bit more aggressive NR over the subject. i am assuming you are shooting in RAW.

you might also want to bump the contrast and clarity a little.

NR and DR? not sure what that stands for

these were shot in jpeg but i usually shoot in raw not sure why i was doing jpeg but was just suggested to do sports in jpeg, im guessing that was not good advice. the guy that told me too works for SI and shoots with a 1dmk3 so he doesnt have as many problems with his images i would think

NR = Noise Reduction, in this case, Noise Reduction Mask.
DR = Dynamic Range, Camera's sensitivity to dark and light at the same time.
