10 feet is cake. with a 1.8 lens, the guide number of a flash will be very high. i know that a 580EX II has a GN of 30m (that's like 100 feet!) with a 50mm f/1.4.
try it at least (even with the built in flash), overhead lights need balancing/fill - try something like a negative .7-1 stop on flash compensation. however, most stadiums have the ickiest of the icky type of light - sodium vapor/ metal halides. you're going to need color correcting gels unfortunately.

Definitely seeing a steady improvement in your pics.
For noise, there's a technique I learned about (and I think Dream Killer covered this in his guide) where you overexpose the image slightly then bring it back down to normal levels in PP. This should minimize the noise in the dark areas of the photos compared to normal exposures. It's called ETTR if you want to check it out.
thanks for crediting me! unfortunately, shutter speed will take the priority on this kind of photography.Edited by Dream Killer - 3/3/11 at 5:55pm
