the more expensive flashes like the 580 im told can sync or whatever at higher speeds than 1/250

It's not the flash that matters for flash sync... It's all on the camera body. Most bodies are limited to 1/200 or 1/250 for sync. Some of the high-end bodies can do 1/500, as well as the Nikon D40 and D70
