Over-clocking help

Hello all!

Well i am going to try and over-clock my pc today and i know a decent amount of information on it and have messed with it before but i have some questions and am looking for some additional guidance.

So this is what i will be using:

Mobo: Asus M3N78-VM

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 215 (2.7ghz) dual core stock 1.344v

PSU: Logysis 480W

RAM: 2x1gb Crucial Technology ddr2 pc2-6400(400mhz) 1.8v

GPU: Nvidia Geforce 9400gt 1gb
core- 540mhz
shaders- 1180mhz
Memory- 266mhz

Plenty of air cooling(3x 120mm fans) 2 in 1 out as well as after-market heatsink.

So first off what do you think is the best i can get out of these?
Second in my bios under the overclocking section it shows this:

CPU Overclocking
-Auto
-Manual
-Overclock Profile

GPU Overclocking
-Auto
-Manual

PCIE Overclocking
-Auto
-Manual

Processor Frequency Multiplier
-Auto
-4x(800mhz)through13.5x(2700mhz)

Processor Voltage
-Auto
-50mv-150mv by 50mv increments

Processor-NB Voltage
-Auto
-50mv-150mv by 50mv increments

Hyper Transport Speed
-Auto
-200mhz-2000mhz

Hyper Transport width
-8 ↓ 8 ↑
-16 ↓ 16 ↑

Memory Clock Mode
-Auto
-Manual

Dram Timing Mode
-Auto
-DCT 0
-DCT 1
-Both

Memory over voltage
-Auto
-6.25mv-393.75mv by 6.25mv increments

Chipset Voltage
-Auto
-50mv-150mv by 50mv increments

What i dont know is what the nb votage does, both hypertransport speed and width, the dram timing, and the chipset voltage. So any help on any of this would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the length of this...

What you can squeeze out of your hardware depends on its overclockability, that is different from chip to chip. It is almost certain that you can achieve at least 240*13.5=3240Mhz on your CPU, but that may increase temps too much if your cooler isn't able to dissipate all the heat. Go here and try some settings in the spreadsheet if you want to get an instant OC, or lower your RAM frequency, to 533 or 667, set its timings according to its 800MHz specs, and start increasing your FSB until you can't boot. Then increase the voltage on your CPU and repeat. Once you are done with your CPU you can try to set the RAM at their max stable speed. You can OC your CPU in windows.

Don't forget to check on temps once you start oceing

Thank you! Yes i know they vary between each individual piece of hardware just speaking in general terms here.

This is what ive gotten it to so far:
Cpu @ 3.5ghz/3502mhz with 1.408v
ram set to 266 because when i up the fsb the ram also goes up of course, so right now the ram is at 750mhz 6,4,4,12,16 timings with only 1.8v(didnt increase yet)
the bus speed is at 280
and it says the ht link is at 2800<--- dont know what it is...
Lastly the northbridge is at 2800 as well and i added an additional 50mv to its original.

Hows this sound? I havent run into any problems yet but will keep you updated.

The temps are at 48 max and at 31 lowest averaging around 35c so not bad.
Thanks for the help!

before i recommend on doing further clocking check your board if it has a 4+1 phase..IF it IS then don't push that thing much..you might end up borking either the board or the chip..as i can see you are nearing the dangerous ranges..IF NOT then you can safely go beyond the safe zone..most 4+1 phased boards do get a tragic end QUICKLY..

set you HT multiplier and NB multiplier to 8(or less) to help you gain stability on higher clocks..

His board has 5 phase power, but the athlon is a 65W chip, so it won't push a high TDP. However, kairi_zeroblade has a strong point. don't push voltages too high, you already have a pretty nice OC there, and following the lead of the previous poster again, set the NB and CPU NB to x8 to help gain stability. These are the links to RAM and PCI devices.
If you can, get a mosfet heatsink for you board to keep the VRM from reaching high temps when OCeing.
keep monitoring CPU and board's temps.

Pretty nice OC

I dont know what the power phase is... What does it do? Id like to learn all i can! How do i set the ht multiplier and nb multiplier? i ddont have an option that says ht/nb multipliers it just goes up when i up the fsb...

what you mean when you say it wont push a high tdp? i dont put the volts too high they scare me too much... Lol!
i am going to go as high as i can and then back off some and run it there. What are RAM and PCI devices? And about the mosfet i cannot, not enough room with cpu cooler... plus its a small board being a micro atx so.... kinda hard!
What is a VRM?i always watch my temps, i have core temp running on startup, which leads me to another question! What should the offset be set at? Cus if i dont offset it it would be at 15C thats impossible! so i have it adjusted to like 17c offset idk if thats right or not but it is at about 35 idl now instead of like 15-17 range.

Thanks for all the help guys!

you can learn more about power phases, mosfet and VRM here, it is something that we overclockers should be aware when OCeing

TPD, Thermal Design Power, represents the amount of power your CPU needs to dissipate when working. wikipedia

The NB and CPU/NB multi should appear on your Bios, maybe not with these names. Where you set the FSB number and the CPU multiplier you should see 2 more multis. it depends form board to board, BIOS to BIOS, but usually it's there.

RAM is you memory the sticks at the right of you cpu
and PCI devices are things like graphics cards, sound cards, etc.

I also use Core Temp on my athlon X2 4400+ and i have an offset of 0, it is reading my temp well, 63-66ºC while folding (24/7 ).

we're help to help in what we can

Thats why im here! To learn all i can!

Hmm the only things i see with my it says spu overclocking and thats my fsb, whewre it says gpu overclocking that is for the on board i presume right? and then pci overclocking is under that, dont quite know how to handle that or how to even test if its fast...

the mulitplier doesnt go any higher than 13.5

AND I KNOW WHAT RAM AND PCI DEVICES ARE!!!!! Haha

So you think my temp was right? at 15c? cus that just seems wrong to me...

I will be back in 15 mins will go mess around with it more and see what goes on ill check back in soon(unless of course it blows up, knock on wood)

It has to be a way of choosing the CPU NB and NB multis... got to leanr a few things of that board's bios...

GPU overclocking is for the onboard VGS, that's correct
Don't change the PCI freq, leave it to 100, or auto, at default setting.

Yeah, the CPU multi is locked, you can't go higher than the one you are offered by default, only lower than that.

15ºC seems low, yes, i just don't have to set any offset in my COre Temp. Try speedfan or CPUID HWmonitor to sse if they present different temps.

I'm off to bed now, it's 4 am here, and i'm tired of messing around a WinXP machine cuz it won't allow me to access a few shared folders, its cranking my head up, baaaah, i think i'm gonna kick it hard and see if that works

Have you read about the phase power, mosfet and VRM? it is very good info to prevent your board from going *puff*-> dead

keep posting, if not me, someone else will be here to assist you.

Thank you! I will let you guys know and i am reading those threads right now before i go mess it up, dont kick it just get win 7 it do it for you all the temp monitors all say the same except bios is different from them...

Goodnight dream of it working and it will for ya in the morn, as well as motorcycles especially the liter bike groups and all of their majestic beauty
