Here is a pic of my tech station on air. Same principle as putting on a box.

looks great guys.
What's your reason for leaving it like this?

Also non related but I bought 1gb of ram for the vortexbox build. it was cheap.
I know 1gb should be enough for something like that but this is only ddr2 pc4200 (533mhz) should that matter??

According to your statement you could put the computer in molten lava and it would be good to go.

Some places are not ideal for computers.

I would not recommend putting your motherboard on a metal work bench.
Wood or some sort of laminate would be fine. If your hard drives are faster than 7200rpm I would suggest some sort of hard drive cage for them.

I used to use a simple tech station that I created myself with about 20 dollars worth of parts from home depot. The case held the water cooling components in via compression. The design worked very well and I would recommend it to anyone.

Let me know if you like the idea and need any assistance.

Please note that at this time of writing this I am very busy with work and traveling often. If you do request help via this thread please PM me as well.

looks great man however I am only doing this temporarily. With the nature of the build it needs to be in a small case.

But putting the motherboard on the motherboard box is fine right?
I have a dvd drive as well can I just put the dvd drive next to the box on a table and then the harddrive on top of the dvd drive? then just the psu next to those on the table? Unless I find a piece of wood I can just put everything on. The table is actually a painted ikea table wood that work?

I have a few reasons, for better air circulation, swapping hardware often make it convenient, and I run the CPU on Dry Ice sometimes.

You have to take that with a grain of salt. If you are putting a PC together, you should have the common sense not to put it on a metal bench.

You need a jumper switch. If you have an old case that the power switch out of it and hook it up.
