To Sleeve or not to Sleeve my Antec HCP1200

Thread Starter
I recently bought the Antec HCP1200 for my upcoming upgrade to dual GTX 580 (considering adding one extra card in the near future for Triple SLI) and little hesitant to Uni-sleeve the attached (non-modular) cables.

Is there a way to safely remove the factory sleeves without cutting or opening the PSU? I have looked through many forums (including the cable sleeving guide on Xtremesystems) and none mentions such work around for units that has sleeves going into the PSU housing.

Antec Customer Service responded to my inquiry confirming that sleeving ANY wired cables or the provided cables will void the warranty

I would have purchased a fully modular PSU (IE: Corsair AX850) without having to worry about the warranty issue however I am in need of a 850watts+ Power Supply for the upgrade. The depth of the Corsair AX1250 is 200mm which is a little too long to fit in my case or else it would have been a no brainer.

Buying extension cables for the fixed wires will be my last option as I already purchase lots of MDPC-X sleeving enough to fully sleeve 2 PSUs(second build project). So I am hoping someone had a similar issue or if anyone has other suggestions as a work around.

Thanks for your input

You have to open the PSU, no way around it.

Yeah, opening it will definitely void the warranty... I believe there is a sticker covering one of the scews.

That's too bad cause (not sure if you noticed during your review sample) Antec decided to cut corners by using some cheap see-through sleeving materials on a truly fantastic product.

I was hoping to avoid paying $50 on extension cables alone (24 pin ATX, 2x 8 pin EPS, 2x 8 pin PCI-E) not to mention the cost of MDPC sleeving material. Unless I switch to a Corsair AX850 and then replace it by a stronger unit (1000+ watts) whenever I'm ready to purchase a 3rd VGA card?

i say do it, but you need a lot of time to sleeve the whole psu, and don't skimp on the heatshrinks and sleeving as well, get plenty of it. I type this as my index finger is missing skin...my palm is scratched up from pulling the cords and the 24pin connector scratching me...there's blood everywhere but the sleeving is looking good. haha

LOL... I hope those pins on the Antec psu are not too stubborn cause I sure like to keep the skin on my fingers
I am by no means a noob to sleeving so I have lots of patience and as you said the satisfaction of it once done is well worth it.

It's just that 5 years warranty down the drain on $300 power supply is hard to swallow

So far it looks like I will be sleeving it fully though not to the inside of the housing. Thinking of using the large sleeve half way and then unisleeve the rest. Some had issues with the hole for the cables going into the housing being too small so they ended up cutting it to make room for the extra space the sleeves have added.

If you're dedicated to having a uni-sleeved PSU I would suggest sell the Antec and get a modular one and lose a bit of money over voiding the warranty. The money you'd lose by selling it wouldn't come close to what you'd have to pay if it there was a hardware failure and you had to buy a new one. And if that ended up being the case you'd have to re-sleeve it anyways. At least with the modular one you can keep the original wires intact and by a second set for sleeving (this way you keep the sleeved set if you had to RMA it or something). Other wise open it up if your going to void the warranty by sleeving it may as well do it right.

The Antec PSU is still shrink wrapped so I will be getting a full refund.

Looking at the alternative fully modular quality power supplies are the Seasonic and Corsair. The other options would be Silverstone Gold Series or the newly released OCZ ZX Gold series (Made by the OEM Great Wall... also makers of the recently reviewed Sparkle Gold Class Power Supply)

To sum it up here are my final options:

1- Keep the Antec HCP1200 and sleeve the heck out of it (of course after a 30 - 45 days testing period) or buy extensions cables.
2- Return the Antec and switch to a Corsair AX850 or Seasonic X-850 and replace it with a stronger unit once I am ready for Tri-Sli
3- Return the Antec and wait for a reputable review prior to buying the Silverstone Strider 1200 Gold or the OCZ ZX-1250

The Seasonic SS-1000XP Platinum series (pointed out in a different post by Phaedrus2129) could be the worth the wait but who knows how long it'll be before they are officially released.
