It's actually quite simple. When things work fine, you only hear about it when people ask questions like 'what have you heard about xxxx?'.
When things go wrong, people talk about the issue.
Perfect example: Think about the last five times you went to a retail store and bought something. If you didn't have any issues with any of the transactions/items,
did you tell anyone about your experiences without being asked
Now think of the last time you had a problem with a retailer or services. How much have you talked about it (if at all)? If you're like most people, probably quite a bit (at least in comparison).
For example, I am utterly disgusted by UPS. The only time that I've ever had something get shipped to my house that wasn't destroyed box-wise was when I ordered a $680 lens from BHPhoto in New York, and I'm pretty sure the only reason why it wasn't destroyed was because I had to sign for it. As such, I've talked to people about it ALOT how bad UPS has been for the most part. I actually have a tripod collar waiting for me when I get home today that I'm scared about the condition I'll receive it in since no one will be there to sign for it.
Now, there's no real way to prove that the packages came from UPS
that way -- but that's another discussion for another day. Long story short, for the most part, you're only going to hear from people that had problems (except perhaps on the Folding Forums with mostly prudent testers).
