HDD and loading my OP system???

Thread Starter
First, this HDD was in this computer before, and my BIOS was unfortunately killed by a power surge/ brownout in my old setup with my previous ASUS board, and now I just installed a new Gigabyte replacement. So I am starting new so to speak, but shouldn't there still be the information on the HDD from before? I used the same CPU, and everything else I had. The only new part is the Motherboard.
I was TRYING to load up my WIN XP PRO, and it will not load. If I unplug the SATA cable to the HDD, then it WILL load from the DVD drive only, then stops of course because the hard drive is disconnected. Does this mean my HDD is dead????
The BIOS setup shows the drive being there, and shows the capacity info etc. like it is working, I even tried to connect the cable after my xp started loading, then it gets to a point and says there is no HDD available.....Am I missing a step hereor is it nuked???? I even tried to start it from the disk drive first, then the HDD in set up, and it just stops after the setup screen and goes to a blank screen. Why would it load from the disk drive, then bonk out when it gets to the hard drive??
Help me Obi Wan, your my only hope.......

Unfortunatly being a new motherboard you will have to start from scratch. My guess there is nothing wrong with the hdd you are most likely using a different chipset and that is why it will not boot.
If you have had the hdd partitioned and installed the os on that you could wipe the partition and install the os on that and not lost the data / info on the other partition of the hdd.

Thanks for the reply, the CPU is the same 2.5 ghz dual core pentium as before's board was using. how do I format, or clear the HDD if I don't have an op system installed?? I looked around in the bios setup screen stuff, and can find the drive, but cannot figure out what else to do with itl like formatting it so the OP system will load up.. The drive worked perfectly before, its a western 7200 rpm, 250 ghz, I would LOVE to save it, don't have the cash to replace it. Is there something I can do from the basic setup stuff from the GIGABYTE start up stuff???

If you have access to another pc DL ( killdisk ) and burn it to cd the set your bios to boot from cd and access the program and follow the prompts for wiping. Then pop in the os cd and reinstall os. I'm sure your hdd is fine it's the chipset from the old mobo that is conflict with your new mobo / chipset that isn't allowing you to boot.

Likely the mobo. If you're running an intel setup (thanks for filling in your system specs, by the way -_-), a change in chipset can prevent the OS from booting. You'll need to reformat and reinstall, or attempt to install over the current install of Windows XP (which can get seriously messy if you don't take precautions). If you can, install the HDD in another system and just back files off of that, then reinstall in your main rig. If you can't do that, get a USB drive and an external HDD (or another USB stick with enough space), install a LiveUSB distro of linux (or a PE version of Windows) onto the USB stick, boot off of it, then back stuff off the HDD onto the other USB drive.

Any ideas why the killdisk will not let me scroll up or down, or make it work??? I burned a copy, and also tried a copy on my USB Flash. It shows me the screens, but won't let me go anywhere....enter does not work, or any other command......I'm so freakin close! and yet it's soooo far away......geeze!

Check bios and make sure usb devices are enabled.

As long as your optical drive is first boot device it won't matter.
