First OC on i7 920, but too hot.

Thread Starter
Hi,

so after i OC'd my i7 920 @3.36 Ghz, my specs are:

HD 5970
12 GB corsair dominator GT
p6t deluxe 2,
cooler master haf 935,
corsair H50.

I followed this tutorial accurately http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overc...html#post64374

But now my CPU temp in general is too high.
Before OC i would have 35-40 idle, now they are at 59!
This is after I recently tried to apply a new layer of cooling paste (Zalman thermal grease ZM-STG1).

So is this the result of a bad layer of cooling paste and/or bad brand of cooling paste, or something else?

Good question, my first time doing these things and I'm not sure.
How much should I apply - so the cpu surface is covered with the color of the thermal paste,
or after I drag my card over the CPU surface to even it out - parts of the cpu surface becomes more visible than other areas?

Anyways I'm wonder if my thermal paste is good, or should I go and get
Arctic Cooling MX-2 or Cooler Master HTK-002-U1? (the only ones available in close proximity)

By the way: I have downclocked to the original 2.67 GHz, but my idle temp is still 55-58.
Could this be a cooling paste issue really? My idle should be below 40 with this setup.

For the thermal paste do a rice grain and place the block on top and let it spread it out evenly. This ensures that there will be good contact with the heat spreader.

Also make sure you are cleaning off the previous paste before applying new paste. Use 70-90 percent alcohol and coffee filters to take it off.

Place it like this:

Thanks, I tried just this, but my idle temps are still at 50+.
After the OC it has not been once under 40 celsius, any ideas as to what's wrong?

I checked your paste on Newegg and some people are saying to apply a thin layer to both the cpu and heatsink. Also make sure the heatsink is properly fitted down onto the cpu.

I will give this a go, but on another note:
the radiator on my corsair H50 inside the case is more warm than cold, is this supposed to be (as it's pushing the heat out that way) ?

Well, seeing how much standard paste there was on the H50 default, Im gonna go get some new paste tomorrow and see if that helps. The zalman paste i have seems extremely thin compared to the one on the picture above and maybe i need to put more on both units..
My idle temp cant go below 48 celsius, and that's with speedstep and asus powersaving mode.

new cooling paste, idle was 35 C at lowest and in prime95 now it's reaching 75 C at 100% usage. Is this still a problem?
