$500 Micro-Atx Gaming Rig

Thread Starter
Hey,

I'd like some help building a micro atx gaming system for $500. So far i've come up with this:

AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition $90
BIOSTAR TA890GXE $100
XFX HD6850 $180
OCZ Agility 2 60GB $120
IN WIN Dragon Slayer $70
RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-630SS$50
Patriot Gamer 2 Series 4GB $60
ASUS Black 24X DVD+R $20

Total: $690

As you can see i'm seriously over the $500 goal.

Any suggestions on different parts?

Which heatsink would you recommend for the CPU? Please keep in mind the limited space oh and I'll be overclocking and hopefully unlocking the other cores!

Thanks

I've decided to add this part to the post so we can keep track of the new build with all the new suggested parts.

AMD Athlon II X3 455 $90
BIOSTAR TA890GXE $100
PowerColor AX6850 $170
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB $55
NZXT Vulcan $70 - COMBO
Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power$65
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB $50
ASUS Black 24X DVD+R $12 - COMBO
XIGMATEK HDT $25

Total: $637

We can do this people!!

NZXT Vulcan is the same price and far superior (integrated handle makes it easy to move as well).

For a decent budget cooler, you could try the Coolermaster Hyper TX3. It uses a 92mm fan and as such fits well into MATX cases.

That PSU is crap, get an Antec or Rosewill that is far better.

Both are from this Source, OCN's Recommended PSU's...

If you really need to stay low price, get this one

Nice find, I'll definitely get that case instead! The cooler looks good but my main concern is it coming in the way of the video card and RAM... guess i wont know till i try it..

I'm gonna have to disagree with the folks above. The Dragon Slayer is a great mATX case. Just look at any review for it. If you like it, go for it.

And just for those nay sayers, here is some stuff to back me up
http://www.overclockersclub.com/revi..._dslayer/6.htm
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...e-Review/993/7

From the overclockersclub review.
"Even when it was paired against the Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced, the Dragon Slayer held on strong and even coming ahead in parts of the temperature tests."

edit: Guess I was slow to post this.
Basically, just get whichever one you think looks/feels better

The board in the combo isn't good enough to support an overclocked CPU.There aren't many good mATX AM3 boards out there. Since it's a small board the power phase is less than that of a full sized Atx board. I've found only 3 boards that will be able to support an overclocked CPU without catching on fire!

They are the:

ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3
GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-UD2H
BIOSTAR TA890GXE

I've opted for the Biostar because imo i think it's the best of the 3.

checkout this list of AM3 boards with their power phase ratings.

i like the RAM. Thanks!

Drop the SSD, you don't need it for gaming.

1tb ~60$.
