Corsair HX1000 High-Pitched Noise

Thread Starter
Dear readers

The thing is, I've been running with my new system for about two weeks now, and I've always been able to hear some "electrical" noise from this PC, but I've always thought it was the GPUs or the CPU working, since I've had a HD5850 which did that.
Then finally I desided to actually give it some investigation, and it turns out to be my PSU (Corsair HX1000 Watt) making the noise.

To sum it up, the noise is very noticable when, for an example, just moving my mouse around on the desktop, playing games, writing this thread etc. there are no doubts about the noise is being affected by activity.

The noise is not extremely loud or headache material, but it is still noticable and very annoying since it is high-pintched, sharp and sort of electrical.

Note that the system runs perfectly and I haven't been experiencing any faulty episodos during the two weeks of action.

What do? Thank you in advance!

I experienced this same noise from my old rig, it sounded like it was coming from the CPU.

If thats even possible.

Well it is possible for CPUs and GPUs to make noise as they are working, but in this case it's my PSU.

Try to look up both Capacitor Squeal and Coil Whine. I've heard of them somewhere else. Google it up. If I remember correctly it does not affect the system, but yes, it is annoying. IF I also remember correctly, the new AX gold Series form Corsair had a noise problem that was soon corrected with a component replacement.

By the way have you used a utility like HWMonitor to see if the voltages are normal and no harm is being done ?

I have a kind of lame PSU in my legacy P4 system that has the effect of changing the speed of my fans (be it case or CPU fan) when I do something like load up a program, exactly like you say, so it could also be a PSU that is not up to standard.

You may not notice it is not up to standard because your setup does not use nowhere near 1000w.

I use to get some odd ticking noises from my HX850, not sure if it was due to line noise though since it stopped when I moved the computer to a new socket.

Wasn't a huge noise but definitely noticeable.

As Above posted mentioned I think this was something affecting my case, wasn't anything serious for me at least, occurred at a specific demand range, just a bit above idle 500-550W I think.

I'll try and move my setup to another 230v outlet tomorrow, see if that fixes things.

Probably coil whine, just the coils on a transformer or inductor working loose a little and vibrating at the frequency of the AC current going through them.
