Help me Expand my PC!

Thread Starter
OK so in July ill be expanding my Storage and Application into my case, so everything will be internal.

Just let me explain before hand that I have no room for 3.5 HDD's so these will all be 2.5 Laptop Drives after I have a HDD Bay made.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136692

I would like to get 2-3 of those for Raid 0, for sure two. However Im not sure if 3 will bring anymore benefit than with 2. If anyone has any links/info/suggestions on that it will be greatly appreciated.

These drives will be used for games and maybe some other applications.

I also know that the seagates are faster, however I like the idea of a 5 year warranty from the WD Blacks, and I've not had a good experience from Seagate either.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152242

I will be getting 4 of these drives for simple media storage, however I will need to put them on a PCI controller. This one to be exact:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815124020

or at least something of that nature, if anyone has a better PCI controller in mind, suggestions are very welcome!

Also, will media be stunted by the 1.5Gb/s? I know the File throughput will be lower, but thats not something im too concerned with since it will only be used for storage drives.

As for the OS drive, is this SSD a quality product?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233107

Keep in mind I only have 3Gb/s ports

I will also be getting a 1215n for school, I've been considering the 64gb c300 for its drive, however I believe its only a 3Gb/s pc, is there something else that will do well as an OS drive for a better price? I dont really need the write speeds, just need the read speeds.

Any and all Info will be greatly Appreciated on this matter, and thanks again for reading

1. corsair ssd's are great.
2. raid 0 is just tempting fate, especially with that many drives.
3. its a better idea to get one or two 3.5in drives rather then a bunch of laptop drives.

If I could, I would. lol But space is a major concern, I can only fit these in one certain area, and thats after I get a bay fabricated.

This will all be in my Vulcan, where the Internal 3.5 bay used to be

Is it possible to raid 0 just the 500gb Blacks and leave the rest in the normal configuration?

You should be able to create an array of X disks, and use the rest outside the RAID array.

When you run the RAID setup program, you can specify how many disks to add to the array. The other disks on your other SATA ports should still be recognized as single disks.

Hmm I don't think I understand what you mean here
Are you not getting the c300 because you only have 3GB/s ports?
Looking at the 64GB C300 ssd (pretty sure it has enough space for OS)
"Compatibility – SATA 6Gb/s, backward compatible to SATA 3Gb/s"

Sorry if I misunderstood

Thats what im hoping for lol, but ill be running off the onboard controller for the Raid array. So like anything Ill just to make sure I pay attention during the set up it seems, unless anybodies had personal experience with onboard raid

Yeah thats about right, and 64gb is plenty of space for what its purpose shall be. The question is whether or not theres a better drive for the price, as using a c300 on 3gb/s is a bit of a waste. However its already at a good price I think 129 on newegg?

Last SSD I had was by Western Digital but they dont produce them often I guess

Thanks again for the input everyone!

oh, any info about the PCI controller or if anyone has had good experience with one would be appreciated also whether or not video streaming will be stunted by the 1.5gb/s transfer throughput

I use the onboard RAID with my SB750 chipset and I have 3 drives in RAID0, 2 drives in single.

ah nice

is a 3 way raid worth it? Or is that a question that is completely dependent on the product in question
