Watercooling 101 for $300

Thread Starter
Okay, I have NO EXPERIENCE whatsoever with watercooling. At the moment it's a distant phenomena that I'm beginning to research....well, now.

I have no idea what a block is (is this where the water goes?) I don't know what a reservoir does.

All I know is water=cool

Cool=Temps Cool=Looks

I've heard quite a bit of rave about the Rasa water cooling kit for like 100 bucks or something.

That sounds awesome, but at the same time I've been bit in the ass so many times that I don't want to regret buying something when I will have to upgrade it in the future or whatever...

So what's the best water cooling kit I could get for...say I went crazy and spent 300. (Probably not crazy enough to some you you watercooling loonys!)

What would I buy? How hard is it to assemble everything? How hard is it to maintain?

After all of this, do you think I should even bother watercooling

I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to reach 4.5 ghz. I would be SUPER happy to reach 4.2ghz

4.0 is still a goal I have not reached.

I mostly want watercooling because the case I have is more for water than air cooling. YEAH I KNOW ITS NOT AN 800D AND IM NOT BUYING AN 800D SO GTHO.

So....Yeah.

One last question. What are the temps going to be from say.. the rasa kit to whatever 300 dollar setup you guys could find me? Is it significant? Is it worth it? If I spent just a BIT more would I get THAT much better quality/cooling?

I don't actually know if 300 dollars is a good number to be around.

Feel free to show me any links that could educate me on watercooling.

Thanks guys.

If you want to spend more than the XPSC rasa kit you can either get the Swiftech Kit or just buy all of the parts separately.
Once the loop is set up there is nearly no maintenance if you use distilled water and either a silver kill coil or PT Nuke. I have had mine running for months and there is no build up whatsoever. In fact the only reason I think I will ever drain my loop and take it apart is to upgrade. Assembly takes time but anyone can do it.
The temperatures from a RASA kit to a full custom loop won't be that different, several degrees (maybe 5?) at most if you do your CPU only. If you are cooling a CPU and one or two GPUs the more powerful pump in the Swiftech kit would pay off then.
Edit: Is it worth it? I sure think so because I value a quite computer that I can overclock.

The Rasa kit is good. Since you want performance you'd be best to go for the Rasa 750 RX360. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

You probably would see a performance increase building from scratch, but the costs can go up fairly quickly when you want the best. Of course just say the word and I'm sure plenty of us will help you spend your money

Q: I have no idea what a block is (is this where the water goes?) I don't know what a reservoir does.

A: The block is a metallic block usually either copper or nickel and attaches to the cpu/gpu/voltage regulators in your computer.

Q: All I know is water=cool, Cool=Temps Cool=Looks

A: Yes water drastically cools your system allowing you to push your component to higher voltages and clock cycles. Also you can add ultra vilot reactive tubing and leds to make your case look pimp.

Q: I've heard quite a bit of rave about the Rasa water cooling kit for like 100 bucks or something.

That sounds awesome, but at the same time I've been bit in the ass so many times that I don't want to regret buying something when I will have to upgrade it in the future or whatever...

So what's the best water cooling kit I could get for...say I went crazy and spent 300. (Probably not crazy enough to some you you water-cooling loonys!)

A: If you want kits The RASA RX360 not the RS 360 kit. This pushes 200$ with shipping.

Q: What would I buy?

A: If you buy the kit there is very little you may need to add.

Q: How hard is it to assemble everything? How hard is it to maintain?

A: Its takes some common sence other than that its fairly straight forward.

Q:How hard is it to maintain?

A: Bi-Yearly maintenance to flush and replace the water.

Q: After all of this, do you think I should even bother watercooling

A: Yes you will not regret the advantages if you want to make full use of your pc parts.

Q: I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to reach 4.5 ghz. I would be SUPER happy to reach 4.2ghz. 4.0 is still a goal I have not reached.

A: You will reach 4.0 and up to 4.5 with the right setup

Q:I mostly want watercooling because the case I have is more for water than air cooling. YEAH I KNOW ITS NOT AN 800D AND IM NOT BUYING AN 800D SO GTHO.

A: The HAF is a great conversion case to take your first dive in you can easily fit a 360 rad on the top which is enough for a cpu and 1/2 gpu blocks.

Q:One last question.

A: Rasa kits will let you reach your 4.2 goal with some high 60 degree temps maybe pushing 70. For $400ish you will be down in the low 60s. The sticky at the top of the WC forum has some great info feel free to post many people here are very helpful.

Hope that answers your Q's d'.'d

Thanks for all the replies guys. Just keeping with this thread.. You guys are saying 60 degrees and that kinda' scares me. Is that 60 degrees max load temps or what? I think my Phenom II would explode at those temps.

What would I be looking at as far as idle temps go? Let's say 70F temps in my room. Colder in the winter.

What's better? The Rasa Kit or the Swiftech? How much better? How much am I gonna' have to pay extra to get that performance?

What if I buy parts separately?

if you get the RX360 kit you will be within 1-3C of a top of the line fully custom loop.

If this is true, that's what I wanted to hear....so...200 bucks for that, huh?

Remind me again, does the RX360 cool GPUs as well?

i have what would be an RX360 kit(the pump and rad) and it cool handles my 460's just fine. I have separate loops for cpu and gpu but you could put them both in the same loop.

http://www.crazypc.com/products/xspc-rx360-93820.html $192 to the door step cant be beat.
