tried putting them the other way around?

I can't for the life of me think why they wouldn't fit...

Might be time for you to take a break. When you come back later you might spot the problem immediately...

Happened to me once - no POST, no error, no fans spinning up. I checked everything. Came back the next morning and realised the power cord wasn't plugged into the back of the powersupply

edit- there's a lonely 6 pin, should i try that?

Not in the 8-pin, no.

Isn't the 6 pin for the GPU?

Does the GPU have power going to it from the PSU?

I don't believe so...

I've just tried it and I get the same symptoms as you if I unplug the GPU power plug.

Some lesser GPUs only take power through the PCIe slot. Better cards draw power directly from the (edit)CPU PSU.

No problem - I tend to ask more questions here than I answer. It's good to be able to (try) to help... good luck!

I know it really doesn't matter like you said to get the board to post. But you need to plug that HD in also. Plug in the 4 pin sata from your psu next to your sata cable on the HDD already. I'm not sure if its been done but just test that out also quick easy one.
you dont need the 8 pin connector you need the 4 pin connector for the cpu power " i inspected the motherboard and i can only see 4 pin connector" and u need to plug that hd also with sata the L shape one in your power supply "black color" and your ram too put it on the BLACK BLACK socket.

The amount of flummox's i have made with building pc's...

One time I even forgot to put the ram in the board, and then i wondered why it wasn't working

Anyways, OT:
If there is no video output, you'll most likely need to supply power to your GPU.
Also,

Have you got the 8-pin facing the right way?
(i.e the clip on the front going over that little nub on the connector itself)?
