24/7 folding rig?

Thread Starter
As much as I love folding, I cringe when I use my rig to fold. Brings in the PPD like a pro, but I would like to build a 24/7 folding machine so I don't fold 24/7 on my main rig. I'm still going to fold on my sig rig till I can get a folding pc, might be awhile, but what do you think I could get for $400? I'm looking for the best bang for your buck folding rig that will do well for folding while keeping it $400. Any suggestions? Thank you .

Right now, all I have is this.
400w PSU
P4 HT @ 3.20 ghz
ATI AIW 9600 XT
(Need Ram)

But it isn't going to do well with PPD. Any suggestions?

p4 not really worth it, puts out <1k ppd i think

for $400, it's going to be tough... you might be able to swing a 2500k rig for <$500 though

you'll be able to run bigadv for 25-30k ppd depending on the cooling/OC

u should grab that $19 CX430 from newegg

Yeah P4 is not going to cut it, neither will the ATI AIW 9600. Need a different processor and graphics card. Suggestions?

You can spend $5 on a GPU to save money, I know TD has 8400gs for that price after rebate or you can check the marketplace.
The h50 also can be found for $60 if you wait a little.
You technically do not need a HDD if you have a spare USB drive and put Ubuntu on it, if not you can grab one for $20 used.

Just some ideas to save money if your on a budget.

i just realized that added up to $550, LOL, but you get the point, it's possible

go with 2500k for the best bang for buck, not only in terms of PPD, but also wattage

Then build a dedicated 2500k SMP folding rig. It'll totally kick ass

I don't mean to hijack the thread but this is really intresting. didn't realize I can buy a sandy bridge for 500bucks. 1gb ram enough for a dedicated folding rig? 500 bucks for a sandybridge folding rig sounds great!

I already have a PSU, 1GB DDR3, 40GB IDE (does the sandybridge motherboard have IDE?)
