With pockets too small to fit a smartphone, I seriously wonder how you fit your hands in them pockets, even my tightest pair of jeans fits my smartphone and my large hands in my pockets fine.

I hate him cause he's right. Not for people on OCN, but for the rest of the world.

I just graduated from school and became an Electrical Engineer, and was shocked and dismayed that even this traditionally geeky demographic is transitioning to apple-fanboyism. Probably 7/10 engineers I know crave all Apple products.

They are winning.

Yep, I agree about size. iPhone is as big as I ever want my phone to be. I actually miss by BlackBerry holster though...

The iPad is much to big to carry around. Usually the only thing a laptop is used for is to display Powerpoint presentations via a projector.
Actually I use my laptop during meetings for all sorts of things...e.g. on an IT meeting I run each week, I enter the meeting notes into a SharePoint list as we are talking about them.

But the root of your point, that portable devices are frequently either less functional or just used for less function, is certainly true in many cases. But even that's okay for tablets...the less functionality matches up well with the "used to do less functional stuff" very nicely.

Finally, I don't think the iPad is too big to carry around, it's the size of a magazine. My laptop is a huge monstrosity in comparison. (It's a 3-year old "desktop replacement" class laptop, so it's a big honkin machine and maybe my experience is not a typical comparison.)

You can buy a 21" mon, 3ghz core 2 from Dell for $399. http://www.overclock.net/online-deal...l-pentium.html

PC's are commodities, and it certainly seems true that all the best products and margins will be in computing that does not take that form factor.

Granted, you have high margins on a $9000 Mac Pro and that has the same shape.

anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. Statistically speaking apple is still far, far in the minority everywhere but the tablet market(who would have guessed with no competition up till now) and is becoming more and more of the minority in the smartphone market.

In the military you are not allowed to put your hands in your pockets and are trained that way. Its just something you don't do.

Phones buldge out and its presses into your thigh, which is uncomfortable.

I wear normal jeans. I have a few pairs from Abercrombie that I bought back in 05' and a few pairs from Diesel 07', My Lucky's won't fit keys so I rarely wear those anymore.

Then how are you supposed to get stuff out of them? I kid, I kid.

They don't press into my thigh, like I said, I just buy Kenji jeans from my local Myers (Australia) and they seem to have normal sized pockets, but my smartphone (As well as my mothers) fit perfectly fine in them.
