Super cheap PSU

Thread Starter
I'm building a cheap rig for my folks....as many have done here..however....

What is the cheapest 400w quality PSU I should go with.

I'm not gonna have to run a better graphics card, onboard will suffice for what they need.

I may not even need 400w, the pc will have 4g's Ram, and an athlon II x2...

CX430W would be okay for their needs. I have a CX430 powering my HTPC with a P4 3Ghz 89W (soon to be upgraded in performance and downgraded in TDP) and 8400GS.

Antec Earthwatt 380W

DO NOT get the CX430. It only supplies 315w, get the CX400 instead.

The CX430 is capable of around 380W max according to more recent reviews. Decent when it's $40, $20 AR on Newegg and it's powering Athlon II x2 with iGP, etc. My unit was had for $10 AR. Definitely better than other cheap PSUs on Newegg, i.e. Logisys and their POS units. If you can get something such as an Antec Earthwatts 380W for similar or decent price, go for it.

Meh, save your money and just buy a case that comes with a generic PSU. If it is just for your parents, and they will not be playing games and only using it for general stuff like email, web or office, then a generic PSU will be fine.

PPL will yell and scream on OCN and say that is bad advice, but at the end of the day it works and is cheap and that's all the really matters doesn't it.

^This advice is for the super cheapo person. Personally I would spend the $40 and be done with it. Crap is still crap.

The trouble with cheap generic PSU's is they can go bang and take out the rest of the system aswell, or, they can give you stability problems and randomly kill components.

For the small saving your giving yourself a lot of potential headache.

CX400W if you can get hold of one, otherwise CX430W or any other known good alternative.
