Several questions for new build.

Thread Starter
Im no expert in the matter, im going to ask very diverse un-informed questions about an upcoming build for a close friend

what are your opinions on SSD's? are they worth it?
what socket should i choose for an i7? 1366?
Im also gessing its a no-brainer to go with sata 3 and usb 3, right?
Is having several HDD's in raid worth it? if so, which configuration is better? raid 1?
4 or 6 gb of ram? what latency should i aim for?
What GPU's are the best "bang per buck" currently? i was thinking an ati 6950, opinions?

just as a guideline, the build would be between 1000-1200 euros.

manythanks to all.

cheers.

SSDs are worth it in my opinion, but only if you can find a deal or you have a good budget. I am in the middle of my build and seriously considering a SSD as well to use it for my OS boot drive. It will increase the speed of your system operation significantly over the HDDs. To house the boot drive and few major applications, you should consider at least 60GB at the least, but nothing more than 128GB. Prices jump so much afterwards. Good deals typically ask for around 70-100 for 60GBs from my research.

Why not consider socket 1155 for Sandy Bridge platform? You have a good budget, so maybe consider the 2600k.

I wasn't going to bother with an SSD, glad I did though, boots into windows in a matter of seconds, the programs I have installed on the SSD load so fast, thinking about getting another SSD in the near future to install all my games on or possibly even RAID 0 with my other SSD to make it that bit quicker

what are your opinions on SSD's? are they worth it? if you have some extra money, worth it , but don't cap of on hardware

Im also gessing its a no-brainer to go with sata 3 and usb 3, right? of course
Is having several HDD's in raid worth it? if so, which configuration is better? raid 1? Raid depends on what you want to do, raid 0 for performance, and raid 1 for data security
4 or 6 gb of ram? what latency should i aim for? 8 Gb isn't expensive anymore these days + 4 Gb should be enough anyway for gaming
What GPU's are the best "bang per buck" currently? i was thinking an ati 6950, opinions? GTX 560 flat out

just as a guideline, the build would be between 1000-1200 euros.

What is your friend using it for? To be honest, besides boot times and benchmarking, ssd are nice but not worth the money, imho.

If he is going to play video games, not overclock, and surf the web, then you can greatly reduce the cost of that system.

For me, drop the cpu down to 2500k, save about 100 dollars (130ish euro). Drop the hd to samgsun f3, save about 30 dollars (33 euro). Drop the power supply to 500-600 watts, save about 40 dollars (50 euro).

Take the 200 euro and get another 560 ti.

The differences for the average user between the 2600k and 2500k is very little.
