i7 870 Temperatures

Hey guys, not really new to the forums, lurked around a bit. Just had a question that I have been a little concerned about. After reading multiple pages of posts and googling everything I could possibly think of, I'm posting to ask if my temperatures were okay. My current setup is:

eVga P55 LE
Intel i7 870 Lynnfield @ 4.0ghz / 1.275 Vcore / 1.25 VTT / 1.65Vdimm
Scythe Mugen 2 w/ Arctic silver 5.

Case is : Coolermaster Scout
Ambient temp is 24C.

Problem is, i'm getting temperatures that peak around low 80's C. No matter how many times I reseat the heatsink, I get the same temperatures. I know that its not the greatest cooler, but reading on forums people are getting alot lower temperatures than I am. Tried the dot and line method for TIM applications. Neither seem to change. (this is all with intel burn in test and prime95) I know the cpu will theoretically never reach 100% load either, but I just don't want it throttling when running intensive applications

Lastly, I've been getting a wierd stuttering issue it seems with current overclock. Seems like the usb ports (mouse and keyboard) primarly occasionally stutter in fps games and in windows. Can't exactly pinpoint the reasoning behind this because the system appears to be stable. (tested overnight with prime95) Thanks for your time.

Try lapping the cooler and CPU IHS. Sometimes the IHs is irregularly concave/convex, and may mess up your contact point.

Does sound like contact from the cooler to cpu is uneven. I figure you can try lapping, or if you got spare $, try a different cooler. Have you tried stock cooler to compare temps?

I do have the stock cooler, but never installed it because after reading for awhile everyone came to the consensus that the stock cooler was garbage. I mean I could give it a shot. But before I give lapping a try, should I just contact scythe about it? Rma it? its out of neweggs return policy so I can't rma through them.

check out my sig rig =) i need quite alot more voltage than you to run at 4.224Ghz ... 1.42v was needed for mine to keep me stable and i reach 80c in stress testing .. and it held stable for long enough .. I only game on this pc and browse the web .

so mine gets the same temps as you at 4.224Ghz 1.42v .. I suggest getting a new cooler , maybe a h70 ?

A few months back i had 3,000rpm push fan on my h50 , used to load 4.2ghz under 70c in 20c ambients . But it was wayyy to loud for me , and i decided i will sacrifice temps for noise so i am only running 2 fans set on low in push pull and my antec 1200 with 11 fans and a 6950 is pretty much silent ..

I have lapped my h50 and my cpu , it did bring better results .. You will have to have a decent cooler with 2 powerful fans in push pull to get any decent results .

i am using as5 thermal paste btw ...

How are u applying it ? it only needs 1 thin vertical line down the centre of the heat spreader , dont do a blob and smudge it in or put a pea size . Do a thin line .

This is what my cpu looks like , lapped and exactly how i applied the paste .

I guess 80C just seems a bit high, but apparently the 870's are warmer than other Intel procs aren't they?

I run my i7 870 @ 4.1GHz for folding with only as low as 1.27v. Temperatures aren't terrible, but can be culprit of convex cooler or CPU. My i7 loads at around 73° max.

the more voltage , the hotter it gets .

Yes the 870 tend to get a little bit warmer than the 9XX i7's .

What's the fan you're using? Push only or push/pull? For your voltage, you might have low 70's with your Mugen.
