There's a reason power supplies state their output power, because that's all they're rated for. Higher quality power supplies are just better at maintaining those specifications under load and are usually more efficient. So your 850W corsair, is good for 850W (unless it specifies a peak value higher than that)

Corsair makes good PSU's but some are better than others IE: the HX series is better than the TX series.

With that said, 850W should be just enough to run tri-sli 470's. In this review, The full system drew 800W under full load

You would be limited by PCIE on your system. When you are scaling 3 cards like that, available PCIE will make an impact. How much is probably subjective.

I ran a 470 Tri SLI on the same HX1000 I use now. Mine were all OC'ed to 800/1600. If you are going to really OC your entire system I would go with a little bit bigger than 850 like 950 maybe 1000 but for light OC'ing 850 should be fine.

I would get a corsair 950tx just to be on the safe side. when you get that close to the maximum a psu can take, the efficiency really takes a hit, and it can be less reliable on occasion.

well i was gonna buy my 3rd card too..i already have a 1kw PSU ready for this..

either get a 875w thermaltake(rated to be a 900w+) or a 950w psu for the cards to fire up with no hiccups..
