First time building new PC, need advice

Thread Starter
This is my first time building a gaming PC with 3 monitors and I've read up as much as I could. It'll be a $2000-2500 budget but I can raise it more if I have to. Here are the parts that I've chosen for my PC:

CPU: Intel i7-2600K
Graphics: HD5970 (possibly 6990)
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 deluxe (possibly asus maximus iv extreme)
Case: antec1200, HAF, or thermaltake armor
Soundcard: auzentech x-meridian 2g (possibly xonar d2x)

I haven't chosen the RAM and DVD drive yet but those would be easy afterwards. I believe the cases that I've selected should fit the components especially the graphics card no problem.

I need advice on what power supply I should get (maybe 800W?) and I'm also unsure if the case will be enough cooling (or how to tell). Advice or criticism on anything is appreciated, thanks

You may want to replace the 5970 on your list with the 6990 (the next gen of the 5970) when it becomes available, which is relatively soon I believe.

with what you have there a 600w would do the job fine you will only need to go higher if you plan on adding to it at a later date! i would also take a look at the gtx 480 or maybe gtx560 as possibilities for your gpu!

as the for 1200 its a mighty cool case so i wouldn't worry too much about that you can always add fans later if you need. (dont know about the others)

if you go with the 1200 when you pick a psu make sure it has some nice long cables on it cos the 1200 is a BIG case and alot of psu's need an extender for powering board/cpu

nice looking upgrade

Get a Seasonic X-850 PSU. The X series is sooo awesome.

Cool, I'll look into the seasonic once I have time. I've updated my list; I don't think I really need HD 6990. 5970 oughta be beast enough unless the price turns out to be similar. I also don't need the maximus either, i think the P8P67 deluxe will suffice. I bought the auzentech so I actually need a PCI slot which maximus does not provide.

Thanks for the advice guys, but just two more things:

1. Are there any compatability issues I should know about?
2. I do indeed intend to add another graphics card in the future once it gets outdated. Crossfire the 5970 with whatever comes out later probably. So would the 850W PSU suggested above be good enough? Or 1k?

Two 5970s will load at around 525 watts while stress testing, so if you're CPU consumes 200w, your hard drives consume ~100w, and everything else consumes 100w, you'd be pulling around 925w from the power supply. I would go with any Seasonic or Antec (Or Mushkin, coming from me) PSU that is 1000w plus.
