Got an Android Phone, now what?

Thread Starter
i've been using the same windows mobile 6.1 tmobile wing for the last of half of the previous decade, the phone served me well, but it was really beginning to show its age, and lack of support for the last few years. (i had a iphone 3gs, but it was defective, decided to return it and cancel my contract instead of getting a new one and then went back to my beloved wing, may it rest in peace )

i've been extremely attached to this phone, but it was time to lay it to rest.

my sister gave me her motorola cliq (the one with the sliding keyboard), i upgraded to the latest firmware it had, which was android 2.1.

i know the technical aspects to android, i know linux quite well, but i can honestly say, this is not linux, well not my linux.

not sure if i want to root it tho and install a custom rom, as i use to do that on my wing, but always went back to the tmobile default for various reasons (but that could be a windows mobile issues tbh. the device was able to run 6.5 winmo, but it was crappy performance wise, so always was stuck in the realm of 6.0 and 6.1)

what are some good free or paid apps for android?

so far i'm liking the phone, very "new" feeling to me.

It does give you extra features with some special apps yes, and some other special features as messing with the partition table (you can completely forgo a EXT3 partition on your SD card) and changing boot screen logos(with the desire it requires an extra step, not sure about that phone). I say its well worth the trouble but its your choice.

root the phone, install a custom rom, overclock it.
rooting give access to the Terminal, along with the entire file system.
if you don't want to root it. at least get the free adw launcher app from the android market.

Get ES File Explorer, that's a decent app for managing files.
Also, if you have a fair use limit on data, download 3G Watchdog.

i'm not a 100% keen on the idea of "OC'ing" my phone. it runs just fine as is and considering how long i usually keep phones, i will prolly be keeping this one long past its prime

since rooting appears to require windows (i'm being lazy, not interested in booting into windows atm), i will do it in the morning.

i'm sure there is a linux way, just don't want to fuss with it atm.
