Can't oc with 16 gb ram

Thread Starter
My first post here, but have read many a post from you guys and know you're top notch when it comes to technical questions regarding oc'ing. Since Im stuck, thot I'd ask what you think I should do. I have an MSI nf750 mb with nvidia chipset. I've been running it with 8 gigs of dual channel memory (2x4 Gskill Ripjaw DDR 1333) and I used the oc'ing switch on the board to take it up to 10% over and no problems. When I tried to take it to 15%, it would freeze up with graphics intensive programs, specifically WOW and Black Ops. I went back to 10% and everythings fine. Today, 2 more arrived in the mail (same as the others - 2x4 Gskill http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231426.
I installed the 2 new ones and the pc would not boot into windows (the monitor would not come on). Then I figured, ah ha, its still oc'ed 10% and the new memory is confused. I shut the pc down, reset the switch to default (no oc), cleared the cmos and rebooted. Everything booted up fine and it registered the full 16 gigs. Then I shut it down, went back and changed the switch back to 10% over and booted up. Same thing happened - the monitor would not come on. I began to do some googling and found some talking about "unlinking" the ram from the cpu. Then I remembered that when I originally had the 8 gigs, how the memory's speed was registering 1400 MHz (1443 or something). Well, now it made sense from what I'd read from others about the fact that when the processor is oc'ed, the RAM is also. I went into the BIOS settings (actually the CMOS settings) and found multiple options in the Cell Menu. However, mine (American Megatrends) has nothing listed about "unlinking". One thing it does have that I thought would correspond the closest to what they were talking about was the "FSB/DRAM Ratio". Its options are Auto (which is what it is set to and which shows 1333 MHz which is the speed of the memory), 1:2 which when selected takes it down to 800 MHz, 1:2.66 which changes it to 1066 MHz, 1:3.33 which results in 1333 MHz, and 1:4 which increases it to 1600. Well I naturally assumed that 1600 MHz would be to high since my memory is rated at 1333. So I felt that if I selected the 1:3.33 (1333) then when I oc'ed, it would keep it at 1333 and run fine. But that wasn't the case. It still would not come up (no monitor). So my question is, am I totally running up the wrong alley here? Is there another setting in the menu I need to change to "unlink" the RAM from the cpu so that I can oc it again (at least back to the 10% I was getting before the additional 8 gigs of ram)? Im at a total loss here.....and I am a total noob at oc'ing.
I would be so very appreciative of any light you could shed here.
Thanks, Marc.

Ok you read your self to confusion here.

I have your same exact board and i memorized the bios from all the overclocking.

If you want to be sure all OC settings are gone just short the CMOS with the jumpers. Then try to boot into windows. Report back

Hey Docmac where are you located? If your in the US i wouldnt mine getting on the phone with you.

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I'm in Texas. And I'm really at a loss at getting this baby oc'ed. If you could give me some insight, I'd appreciate it. Gotta crash right now, but if you could give me a call tomorrow afternoon (anytime after 2pm, central time) that would be great (or I could give you a call if you want to reply back with your number - either way). Thanks, Marc.

well i can suggest you try to manually set all the timings without actually having your motherboard sat in front of me i wouldnt know which part to look for as bios are different.

but set the timings and power to the rated stock settings to unlink the memory in my bios its on the cpu page but i use intel so.... could be different also when you populate all banks of memory it can and does cause stability issues as you have a hex core cpu you really wont notice any difference from stock to overclocked

expesually as you only have a 20inch screen which probably has a low res 1680x1050 or lower...

As far as unlinking the memory in the bios, I cleared the bios by moving the jumpers. Is that the same thing?

As far as unlinking the memory in the bios, I cleared the bios by moving the jumpers. Is that the same thing?

Doing so will set the bios to read the JEDEC settings and adjust to that.

no its actually a specific setting "memory/fsb linked/unlinked"

i would have to have your motherboard bios litrally in front of me to find the specific setting maybe check in your motherboards dedicated thread the guys who have it in there should be able to help you..

tl;dr but running 4 sticks of RAM (especially 4gb sticks) is going to require a lot more CPU-NB voltage. Start at 1.35v and work your way up.
