driver stopped working (9800GTX)

my computer is in my sig. for the past 2 months i've been getting artifacts on my desktop while im browsing the internet or just listening to music, and the artifacts get worse and worse and then the screen turns black, but im still able to see my mouse pointer, and move it around. sometimes i cant even see the mouse pointer though. sometimes i get the windows message that the display driver has recovered and things work again, but not for long cause again i get the freezing and artifacts and black screen.

my computer never had this before. this started just 2 months ago. i tried installing a driver from 2 years ago, and the same thing happens. at first it looked like everything was fixed, but after a week or 2 again i got the same problem. so then i installed the latest driver again, and again things worked fine at first bu then i got the problem again. now i just uninstalled the driver and just using windows driver which sucks... cant even use aero.

what is going on? is it the nvidia driver? is it vista? is it my video card hardware? what do i do?

PS: didnt notice theres a section for drivers. mods can move it there.

Sounds like your 9800GTX is dying. My 8800GTX went the same way, horrible artifacts, kernel driver crashes and total instability, it was unbearable. If you'd rather give it a kickstart, then baking would be the most viable option. If you're not sure what I mean, I'm referring of course to the most awesome way to fix a GPU ever, bake it in the oven

There's a few threads on how to do it around OCN, but decide what you want to do first, as baking is potentially risky.

yeah that does sound pretty crazy.. the baking. man that would really suck if my card is dying... i paid 300 for it back in the day its temps are fine... same as they were 3 years ago.

would the gts450 be a big upgrade from the 9800gtx?

yes the 450 with be a major improvement but if i was you i would look at 460gtx minimum i had the same card as you same errors in xp and win7 the card actually died

also in the uk the asus 480gtx is curently the same price as a 560ti not sure in the states as i dont live there but shop around you could pick up a major bargain!
