What's the best Sata 3.0 (6gb/s) PCI card?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to buy an up and coming SSD that fully utilizes Sata 3 but my mobo only supports Sata 2. Which SATA 3.0 PCI expansion card is the best?

Help is definitely appreciated.

There's no PCI/PCIe SATA6 GB/s expansion card that's better than the Intel SATA6 GB/s unless you get into something decent/pricey.

I purchased an LSI 9240-4i card and it works well on my Crucial 256GB C300 drive.

It doesn't matter if you want/need RAID or not.

I couldn't find any SATA 6GB/s cards that were an improvement over an Intel ICH10.

Save your money for a new MB or prepare to spend @ 200.00.

Really? frown.gif

I guess I'm screwed. No point in buying a new MB for now, if I'm gonna buy one, I might as well save up for Ivy Bridge then, cause really, what's the point of buying a 1366 mobo only for sata 3.0? frown.gif

Would it be stupid if I bought an OCZ Vertex 3 or a Crucial C400 and ran it with Sata 2? I think I'd lose around 100mb/s on most tasks, but would it still be worth it?

Sequential performance is not important for OS. Over 90% of the OS operations are random. The rest are small sequential reads and there are only tiny sequential writes. Large sequential read/writes are almost non-existent.

Thanks Duckie smile.gif

Based on early reviews or other information, which next gen SSD would you recommend? OCZ Vertex 3? Crucial C400? Something else?

Just to show ya the difference.....

Here's my Crucial 256GB C300 with the crappy Asus 6GB/s card....

asus6gbcardasssdbenchc3.png

Here's the same drive with the Intel ICH10R....

ich10.png

Same drive with the LSI 6GB/s card.......

asssdbenchatac300ctfdda.png

As you can see, a quality SATA3 interface makes a difference.

IMHO the OCZ/SF drives don't hold a candle to Crucial.

I've had 9 SSDs and the OCZ Vertex 2s were the only drives that I knew I was going to sell immediately after using them for one day.

Buy the Crucial and call it a day. smile.gif

I'm looking to purchase another 256GB C300 for a RAID0 setup when the C400 series emerges and the C300s drop in price.

Crucial isn't persnickety about where the drive was purchased and the 256GB C300s are going for @ 420.00 on Ebay but I have seen some new units go for 300.00!

I haven't seen any confirmed specs on Crucial's new drives but great deals may be in the future for a C300 drive when the C400s emerge.

I'd love to buy the LSI PCI card, but it's too expensive. Would the C400 perform horribly on a regular Sata 2?

I can't speak about the C400 series because they haven't been released but my chart above with the C300 on an ICH10R IS SATA2.

Seriously, what else is there to know?
